Cant use all of new drive?

Hey guys i just installed a 1TB HD on my desktop. Its a Seagate Barracuda SATA drive. Comes with a disk to copy clone partition bla bla bla. Now no matter what i do i cant get the info off my old HD and on to the new one with with out if only being the size of my old drive. Id much rather just copy over and have a TB of space rather than partition but either way i cant get it to work. What do i have to do or what can i do in this situation??

sooooooooooooooooooooooooo you want One, 1TB drive… instead of 2 xxxGB + xxxGB drives?
Uhhh uh uhhh.
what os?

should give you an option to just delete the 2nd partition and add all of the space to the first one.

Yea basically this is a all out better drive and i just want everything in one place not 2 drives. And im on XP home edition. Yea i wish it was that easy but it doesnt give me any option like that.

Uhm, sounds like you need to do a format and reinstall windows on the 1tb drive if that’s what you want which is what it sounds like.

Why don’t u just run windows off one of the smaller HDs, and use the 1TB drive for storage?

Copy --> Paste

I was told copy paste doesnt work in my head it does lol.

And i dont want to just install windows on this drive i want all my info onto it.

Uhh you can expand a partition from free space.

Uhh LZ im a ratard when it comes to computers would you care to explain how to do this for me?

So say you have two shitty b18 motors…you can make one rad V8 LS1 out of them…

If you use the disk clone utility it came with and it creates a partition the on the 1Tb the same size as the old one…You can expand the new partition on the new drive to take up the rest of the space once you finish the copy.

Yes but how do i actually go about expanding the new partition to take up the rest of the drive? Do i need a program or is it something i can do with out?

I haven’t done it on XP in a while you should be able to use diskpart which is built in to do it…

I know you can do it easily in Vista also.

Yea im doing some searches and everything is for vista ill keep looking thanks

I forget if you can extend the boot partition in XP or not with diskpart…

If not just get a pirated copy of partition magic or something.

i just dled easeus but of course it wont let me used the expand option only the create a new partition. Ill keep looking.

easeus actually did work i was just doing it wrong before so just a heads up if anyone needs a free program do this kinda thing.

Thanks guys

Hmm… aren’t there utilities that come with the new hard drive? (Maxtor = Maxblast, for example). Was able to “copy partitions” (old drive to new) with something like that (it boots from the CD, so everything copies.

He was doing that it would copy the partition and make it the exact same size…Then he needed to expand it.

“partition magic”

yeah, you need something like partition magic which can enlarge a partition without losing the data within the current one.

OR

just copy the data over.

Download a Ubuntu live CD. Boot it from the disc and go to System>Partition editor. Drag the partition you want as large as you want and poof.

Free and simple once you get the free Live CD from Ubuntu.com.

Info on the actual app you would be using: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
