Car wax questions

My car is black and old. Origional paint as far as I know. The clear coat is fading and looks kinda white in some places, white and somewhat abrasive… I’m wondering can you lightly wet sand with like 2500 grit or so and smooth it out and then wax the car and have it look decent and not so faded looking? Or is there another means for taking care of bad clear coat fading without getting the car actually painted. I just want to make it manageable for now until I decide when/how I want to paint it.

Any information would be helpful, I know there’s a few people here that can do some amazing jobs at waxing cars from the pictures i’ve seen so I figured someone might be able to enlighten me some.

crappy cell phone picture of what my hood looks like.

It appears that it’s failing. Not much can be done.

It doesn’t look like oxidation, which can be polished off.

repaint time

I figured as much. On the right side of the whiteness it looks like there’s no clear coat at all. Left side it looks fine. Wasn’t sure if I could wet sand lightly and smooth ti out and then wax over it to at least give it a mild shine and make it not so obvious the clear coat is demolished. But I didn’t think that you could. I want to get it repainted but won’t be doing that at least until summer, so I wanted a temporary solution.
