Dom’s (8grand) birthday was this weekend. So I made all kinds of plans to take him to an expensive restaurant, get a massage and have his car detailed…I took him to get a massage Saturday morning…We came home to find my cat barely able to walk. So we took him to an emergency vet clinic. They thought he either had an ear infection or toxicity to something. Spent $190 there. Took him home, then had to take Dom out to dinner here because I couldn’t afford to take him to the place I made reservations. So we ate and went to a movie. Came home, went to give the cat (Willie, and no I didnt name him) his antibiotic…Willie could barely move and his head was rolling around. We rushed him to Wheeling to a 24 hour clinic. They think he has an infection in his brain. So he spent 2 nights there, getting antibiotics and anti-inflammatory’s to take the swelling off his brain. I picked Willie up Monday morning, at about 9am. He was even worse when I got him home. He can’t walk at all, can even hold his head up. He was able to walk before, he just fell over a lot. Now he won’t eat, drink, and hasn’t even used the litterpan. I also think he’s been having seizures. He’s been wheezing and he cries sometimes. I had to borrow money off of Dom to pay the second vet bill, $170. So this morning I had to find a way to get him back to the vet. I applied for a credit card made for vet bills, denied. I don’t qualify for any of the emergency grants for animals. My mom loaned me $100. I’m leaving in a half hour to take him to my regular vet. They said they may be able to insert a catheter into him, and let me take him home and give the the IV fluids myself, since I’m out of money. I’m probably sound like a moron, but I’m attached to the little guy and it’s hard to look at him laying there, not even able to move. Any suggestions, words of encouragement, or donations would be greatly appreciated. :dunno:
heh, i hope this cat survives the worst of it. Shes really attatched to this little guy. Her female cat(grey one), seems to favor me more then her. Willie seems to like maggie.
Dont you just wish fun pets had longer lives (ie cats, dogs)
i mean you could get a sea turtle that would like 110 years but they dont really float my boat.

Awwwwwwwww Marge, so sorry to hear, that is devestating to have a pet fall ill. Do you think your Vet could work out some kind of payment? I mean, they should understand that you want to save his life I hope he pulls thru. :bighugs:
I took him to my regular vet this afternoon…We were there for 3 hours. My vet is related to my family, he’s actually my mom’s second cousin. He really helped me out with a huge discount. He gave me everything for $100, all of this would normally be at least $250. He’s also going to check Willie again in a week, for free. He put a catheter in Willie, and gave me IV fluids to give him at home through the catheter. He also put him on 2 different antibiotics, one which is supposed to be able to get through to his brain. He gave him prednisone (sp?) to take the swelling down in his brain. He also gave me prescription cat food, which I have to force feed to the cat. As well as a supplement which I have to feed him through a syringe. Willie started having seizures today, and had pretty bad ones while we were at the vet. He’s not moving at all, just flops his head around a little. The doctor said his prognosis is poor. I started bawling in the vets office when I heard that. I knew he wasn’t doing good, but just hearing the vet say it really upset me. I don’t know what I’ll do if he doesn’t make it.
Maybe you should think of what his quality of life will be if he does make it. I hate to see pets suffer. I feel for ya. Nothing worse than a sick pet or kid.
If he makes it through this, he could be back to normal after a while. The vet said he doesn’t seem to be in pain. I don’t like to see him this way, but I don’t think I could put him to sleep either. If he doesn’t start to get better, I will have to consider it.
I’ve been through something very similar with one of my cats (orange like yours) years ago. It turned out that he was going through kindney failure and I spent well over $1000 in a month getting him healthy again. I literally told the vet that money was no object and to do anything and everything that they could to make my cat better. Apparently that doesn’t happen too much becuase they were quite surprised at my willingness to pay gigantic bills.
Unfortunately his condition was chronic and he had a few more relapses over the next year before his quality of life was so bad that I had to put him to sleep. All the money in the world would not have saved him at this point and it was the kindest thing I could do for him. The money that I spent on vet bills bought me almost an extra year with him and I feel it was completely worth it.
My cats illness and death was very rough on me and my other cat and we were both miserable for many months until another cat showed up at the front door and demanded to be part of the family. The new cat helped us both do some healing and move on a bit with our lives. Right now I’m up to four cats (my oldest cat is from a shelter and the other three are strays) and I don’t hesitate at all when it comes to spending money on any of them for checkups, shots or medicine.
Yeah, he was fine, and then Saturday is just hit him like a ton of bricks. They think he may have contracted it months ago, when he was a stray. I adopted him through a foster agency. They think he has toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can travel to the brain. This is what caused the encephalitis (swelling in the brain). I know his chances aren’t good, but he pulled through once when he was found half dead along a road, so maybe he’ll make it again. He’s been hanging in here with me since Saturday.
I wonder if it is something else.
If he was found almost dead along the road once before, may be the original owner was having trouble and dumped him. Have the vet check the cat for diabetes…
The reason I say this is because I had a dog that had siezures. The vet said she was probably allergic to something and wouldn’t live long. At the end I think she had diabetes and it was too late to do anything. But her siezures would come and go. She would go like 6 months without having any then have like 5 in one week. It was really weird. All you could do was hold her while she was having them. She also knew when they were coming because she would cuddle up to you like she was scared. The fact that she new she was going to have one told me that she felt funny… like her sugar was low.
