I don’t think he meant that it’s a sin “in Catholicism,” but in general. My understanding is that praying to anyone other than God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is a sin. Why not pray to Moses, David, Elijah, Peter, Paul? Where do you draw the line? The fact is Mary was not God.

At one time the Church endorsed the selling of indulgences, and we all know what a crock that was.

The point I’m trying to make is, you sin against God, not your priest, or your religion. If an act is a sin, it’s a sin no matter what church (or temple or mosque for that matter) you go to on Sunday. The goal is to understand your relationship to, and with God, and participating in organized religion is a part of that, because we have a duty to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

This is why it is so important that you understand the Bible, which also says (easy now Catholics) “call no man father,” but that could spark another entire debate.

So I would say, join a church, just make sure you are comfortable with their theology. Don’t be afraid to switch churches later, if you find you’ve learned things from reading the Bible that have changed your views.

i guess i should have worded that better. they view in the church would be more or less asking mary, saints, your grandpa wilbur etc. to go the the big guy on behalf of you. liek that extra help on top of praying to him yourself. not as in praying to them as they’ll be the ones who can answer your prayers.

If you’re going to find religion, read up on as many as you can.

I was born to two Catholic parents, who had me baptised Catholic, even though neither of them believed in most of the things the church says. Catholicism is the religion of adherence to tradition and maintaining consistency, whether it fits the times or not. When you drag the anchor of Catholicism around, you’re supposed to be anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-premarital sex, anti-birth control, anti-masturbation, et cetera… Why convert to a religion just to make a half-assed commitment to it? You can find a monotheistic religion (or fuck, even a polytheistic one) that is more in line with your presonal beliefs. While most people I know are “Catholics”, NONE of them agree with the church’s views. It’s all inertia; Born a Catholic, die a Catholic.

I don’t know where this fits it with what you believe, but I have a few friends who have been attending UU masses:

Alot of people are talking about choosing a religion or church based on what it can do for you. Which one has the best people to meet, which one has the best set of guidlines for living. which one lines up with your personal opinions on how life should be and people should behave.

We aren’t talking about any of that here, this isn’t about what can it do for you or what makes you feel good about yourself.

Straight up this is a choice about what you believe about our existance. We are here, we came from somewhere, there is a TRUTH. This is all about discernment of the truth, we are talking where we came from, how we live and where we are going after we die. Basically one choice is correct among a million incorrect views.

This is about finding the true God and what he wants of his creations. Not what you think you want or what you would like to believe is true.

which also does nothing at all if you read the bible. God doesn’t have friends that he takes advice from he chooses and he does that alone

I always say"believe" in ur self and you will do no wrong, I strongly believe that religon no matter what you worship or believe, is set to ones path in life. Meaning have that person live a moral good natured loving life.

You might want to read up on that before you go posting links. Unitarians reject the Trinity, you know, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Anyone familiar with Catholicsm should find a serious conflict there, I’m not telling you which one to accept, but Catholics, Presbyterians, Lutherans and Baptists all believe in the Trinity, I’ll let you decide.
