CEL code: EGR function

Ok, so recently, my CEL’s been playing peek-a-boo on me. I pulled the code and its EGR Function.

For some reason, when I’ve got the throttle set in one position for too long, the light comes on and my fuel economy goes down the shitter… My fix for it is get off the gas for a couple of seconds, get on it again and leave it in a relatively low position (low throttle), so that engine vacuum runs somewhat high. Eventually, the CEL turns off and I get my decent fuel economy back.

So I’m assuming that it may not be the EGR itself being clogged, but the EGR controller, I think its called the BPT. I wanted to know, what should I be cleaning/replacing, and how should I be doing it?

Removing the EGR is a S.O.B.

I heard that you could spray carb cleaner/brake clean in one of the hoses (not sure though), so I wanted to know, what hose is it?

Any inputs?

Sounds like its sticking (your EGR valve). Your going to have to take it off and inspect/clean the port, and inspect the pintle and check the valve itself for free movement. Good luck.

yea I’ve recently taken my egr and all associated valves off recently and cleaned them with carb cleaner and a wire brush to get all the carbon off the insides as much as possible.

You can use a “crows-foot” ratchet set or what I used was just a universal joint with a socket on the end for 2 of the bolts. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/OBJECTS/52500/52457.JPG

The 3rd bolt I removed I ended up using the same part from above but bought one that had a 12mm socket built into it…therefore fitting under the intake header piping and thus being able to remove the bolt. Worked for me.

Hope that makes sense

Hmm… Still confused as fuck… I might as well place an order for intake manifold gaskets since it’ll probably be easier taking off the manifold/plenum…

I’ve got an idea on how to take the EGR valve out, its just the big fucking nut on the pipe that goes to the exhaust manifold. There’s no room to get any of my wrenches in there…

lol thats why you see all those “specialty tools” out there, lack of room to manuver. Grab the torches, your wrench and a vise,…get creative !!

Haha… Yeah…

Does anyone know if the KA24E intake plenum have a gasket between itself and the intake runners? My buddy’s 2.0L VW never had one, so I just wanted to be safe and order one ahead of time before I go digging in.

I’m gonna try to do this Monday/Tuesday on my day off. I can’t afford to use a full tank of gas (possibly more) just to drive to the Bings meet…
