hey guys I hear a little bit of slappage coming from my engine and jantos looked at it and said just to be safe I shuold start with changing my chain tensioner on the left side, there is a little oval cover with 2 bolts on it, how should I go about changing this…
will oil or coolant spill out once i open that ?
will I need to gasket anything ? (fsm says no)
will I need to calibrate anything after taking it out ? (fsm says no)
is there a specific one I need to buy or can I just get a G20 one from nissan ?
is it slide in and slide out or will I have to take out other stuff ? do i have to hold the chain from under the valve cover or the guide from falling over or anything like that
here is waht I found in the FSM about installation and I am unclear as what to do, is it just as this says with the hook thing and thats it ?
if anyone knows the answers to any of these please LMK in this thread
thanks
It’s very straight forward if you are simply replacing the tensioner.
Remove the 2 (10mm?) nuts holding the tensioner in. Replace gasket with a new one. Setup the new tensioner according to the FSM with regards to pushing it in and engaging the hook. Put it back in and torque down. Crank the motor over by hand and the tensioner should pop out and engage.
It comes with a new gasket when you buy it. You should pull the vavle cover so you can check to make sure it unlatches properly. Don’t try and reclip the old one, it’ll be full of oil.
I bet it’s way easier to do on a RWD SR20 than it was on my FWD NX2000!
And even then it was super easy.
if you want to be better safe than sorry then do the valve cover but most likely it will be find without it.
ok so i get a new one, i lock the hook onto the pin, i slide the thing in there tigheten it and everything, and than i crank the engine by hand and I will ehar a click ? and if pull my valvecover, will i be able to see it engage ? i mean why do i change this thing anyway can it be that this thing has failed compeltely ?
You can see it from inside if you pull the valve cover. There’s an update for them/new design, I believe it’s a bigger oil passage way.
Read the fsm, I think you’re supposed to turn the motor forward (by hand), if it doesn’t latch, then go backwards. Not 100% sure, I can’t remember when I changed mine.
ok guys the new tensioner looks different and is identical to s15 sr tensioner, it is a revised version of it, you need to order gasket Gasket 13079-2J200 and the new tensioner style is 13070-2J203, the original old style is 13070-2J200, they look different but apprantely are supped to work the same here is a pic for comparison
