Well one of President Obama’s first orders was to close Guantanamo Bay prison.
As you might guess I approve of this decision, I think it has done nothing but hurt our image in the world and has become a stain on our constitution.
As long as a system is setup properly, I would like to see these prisoners removed and give a trial for their crimes. Preferably a military tribunal, one that uses due process of the law, which has been ignored now for years.
I’m not sure this falls under their jurisdiction, I could be wrong. Why do you think that the Democrat controlled congress would not go along with this?
to be honest i have no facts behind this statement… it just seemed like the right thing to say. congress has to much input… i say if the president wants to do something then let him do it… congress shouldn’t have power to deny his bills
There are a few ideas out there, such as having them sent to other countries involved in NATO and such, also the idea of sending them to detention facilities here in the states. Obviously there are going to be a lot of kinks with this but his plan is to have it closed by next year.
So, many of these questions will be answered by then.
One thing that should be understood however is that closing Gitmo Prison does not mean Obama’s going to just let them go.
Without knowing your position on gun rights, I find it very peculiar that it’s usually the gun-rights folks who approve of Gitmo, but I find a detention center where American citizens can be (and have been) detained in connection with alleged terrorist plots, for years, without being charged with any crime, completely in violation of our Constitutional rights and the foundations of our democracy, to be absolutely appalling.
If the people are guilty, they can be convicted in a court of law. If there’s insufficient evidence out there to convict, they should be surveiled, not imprisoned, since it’s not certain that they’re actually guilty. Security’s important. Keeping our country safe is important. But it does not justify a detention center set up specifically to circumvent Constitutional rights granted to people charged with crimes in the United States.
Would you be all for curfews, if that’s what it takes to save more lives? Martial law, if that’s what it takes to save more lives? Suspension of elections, if that’s what it takes to save more lives?
Guantanamo Bay’s a stain on our national reputation, and ignores our Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms.
That being said, wouldn’t it make more sense to have a plan to do something with the people in the prison before there’s a plan to close it? Just seems a little backwards to me.
I dont think its a good idea, I mean putting these people on our soil and having them mix in with other people is going to lead to a lot of behavioral problems that I do not think they will be able to handle.
Give the US Citizens trials, they are the ones the constitution protects,. All the others need some sort of war trials, and even then what do you do with the random guys picked up in the middle of Iraq and Afghanistan? Sending them back may just cause them to blow themselves up in the middle of a school or US Convoy. Some of them had that intention and then were “detained”.
Its a tricky situation considering a lot of them are part of a group that doesn’t call 1 place home, but instead, any place home, and they hate everyone but their group.
Surveillance does not work when the suspect flees to the middle east.
I have to read up a bit on how many of them are actually US citizens.
If its a “POW” type camp, your not supposed to let the prisoners go until one side gives up…
