Your mother taught you to treat others as you want to be treated, and you believe that means if someone would treat you poorly, you should treat them poorly? You got it backwards, buddy. The reason we should treat them better than they would treat us is because our society is more just, more free, more civilized. If you’re willing to give up the staples of civilization and freedom that make our society what it is, because we have an enemy that is different from us, I think your mother’s teaching was not the only thing that you missed.
You don’t have principles because of the times that they’re easy to follow. You have principles to control yourself during the difficult times, and keep your barbaric, uncivilized, animal nature from coming out. Work on it.
Oh shoot! It takes time and effort to give a trial to a detainee? Again, you’re missing the point. We shouldn’t be detaining anyone without trying them in a timely fashion, whether or not they’re WASP Americans like you. We’ll easily convict those with concrete evidence, but maybe we can set a few innocents free before they’ve been in prison for 10 years of their life.
You know, if we imprison everyone, then there can’t be any terrorist attacks at all! Are you willing to put on the hand-cuffs, ball and chain, and step behind bars first, so everyone else can be safe?
Strange, I think you’re terrifyingly apathetic and almost inhumanely unaffected by the imprisonment of other human beings, innocent, and uncharged, for years at a time. You’re not only a terrible American, you’re a terrible human being.
I guess you need to be cynical and vague to disguise how invalid and inhumane your argument is. No one is laughing with you, you’re terribly wrong on this and it’s embarassing that you can’t see that.
Are you really that dense? I’m only tangentially worried about the terrorists’ rights. I’m worried about the people who were accused of being terrorists but are in reality completely innocent! There are certainly some in that group, if you look at both the report mentioned on the last page and statistics regarding imprisoned people. The point is, that in order to ensure that the innocents are not unjustly detained, and potentially abused, we need to give them all trials. If there’s a reasonable doubt, we don’t have any business holding them, because there’s a reason to believe they are not a terrorist.
As for the torture, it doesn’t produce good intelligence, it’s against our founding principles, the Geneva Convention, and our own policies, and even the terrorists shouldn’t be subjected to it, because it serves no good purpose. No matter how good it might feel - it’s barbaric, and we’re better than that.
What is it you people don’t understand? Not only is physical torture immoral, unevolved, unconstitutional and just WRONG, it’s also ineffective!
People die because we’re wasting time in Guantanamo Bay. Sending our forces on wild goose chases because we beat some poor sap until he “confessed” ISN’T saving anybodies lives, it’s not protecting our country, it’s not protecting our liberties, and it doesn’t make the US look tough.
It makes us look weak, confused, desperate, pathetic.
