Clutch noise question

So I was driving and coming up to a stop light. I started to slow down and put the clutch down. When I got down to about maybe 5 miles an hour the light turned green, and I had to choose between first and second. I chose second, but knowing it would start off in very low rpm’s if I just engaged the gears early, I let out the clutch very slowly to pick up a little speed. As I did, the clutch made this moderate rusty metal noise like a squeaky hinge, but more low pitch. Anyone know what that might be? Just looking to see if it’s like a fatal problem or not.

what? What gear were you in and at what throttle level. Sounds to me like you were bogging a bit (too low a speed to pull that gear) although you can pull out from a dead stop in 2nd if you clutch is in good shape.

Well, it’s usually no problem to pull out in second when I’m not at a dead stop. In fact, I do it alot, but every once in a blue moon it will give me that noise. I thought it was from moisture, but I probably just need a new clutch. Aside from the noise, it starts off fine.

peel the boot back and check where the clutch fork and slave cylinder pin meet on the side of the tranny. Sometimes it needs lubed. Could also be the ball inside the bell housing that the clutch fork rides on.

how many miles on the car? stock clutch?

101,xxx and I dont know how old the clutch is, but it’s most likely not aftermarket. The previous owner didn’t give me much info verbally, but I have all the maintenance receipts. I’ll have to estimate the mileage on this clutch. Thanks for trying to help guys.

If 99% of the time your clutch isn’t making this noise or otherwise behaving strangely I’d say you have nothing to worry about. IMO average clutch life is usually somewhere around 100k anyway, so this might be an early sign that your clutch (or a component thereof) is getting worn, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep unless the noise gets more frequent or the clutch starts slipping/feeling different.
