The problem is basically a quiet clinking. But it only happens on several occasions. On idle sometimes it clinks intermittently, when I start moving slowly with the clutch not completely released, or at very low rpm still in gear. You can only hear the clinking from the outside, but when I have my windows open it is very noticable (esp. when the sound bounces off cars/the curb).
I was talking to broccoli briefly about it and he suggested it may be the bearing hangar for the transmission, or a missalignment of the clutch.
If anyone would be able to let me know what they suspect is the problem, and what I can do to fix it, that would be greatly appreciated.
Before getting into anything else, check the dust plates (the backing plates) on your brakes. They’re notorious for rusting free and interfering with the wheel.
I checked the break dust plates, and they all seem okay. The clinking is getting really annoying now. Once again, most of the time on low idle, and starting to move away in first, as well as low low rpm in first or second.
I think it’s your emergency brake cable hanging and clinking on your driveshaft. There’s a splitter 3/4 down the driveshaft that’s fastened to the underbody. That clamp usually rusts out and hangs down…
What type of clutch is it that you have? It might be clutch chatter, most racing styled clutches produce a bit of chinging noice when you let off slow.
I have an OS Giken twinplate ceramic clutch on mine that is a bit noisy when the clutch is depressed. I took it apart to check it out & even changed my pilot bearing but it just seems to be normal for the clutch.
A friend of mine has the same clutch in his with the same problem.
If you have just a street clutch, the only way to properly diagnose it, if indeed the noise is coming from the transmission itself, is to take the assembly apart and check your bearings, fingers & springs in the assembly. No matter what it is, to repair it it all needs to be taken apart anyways.
If your not of a mechanical nature I would just recommend leaving it until it gets worse before generating concern. If it gets progressively worse from the inside, you have no choice but to take it apart.
Without hearing it I would say either clutch chatter or pilot bearing from what you describe. Sometimes release bearings go intermittent. When the bearing rides on an angle it makes noise, when it rides straight its quiet.
Hopefully I helped, if you need my assistance in anyway PM me.
I have shop in east GTA if you want me to have a look @ it.
Oh, and another point, your clutch cant be misaligned unless the splines on the clutch plate or the splines on your input shaft are screwed.
Clutch only rides one way, and its extremely rare to have worn/damaged splines.
And if your hanger bearing is gone, your noise will be behind the shifter on the drive shaft underneath, not the transmission, and most likely will not be intermittent
