Clutch Noise

Hey Guys,

I’ve noticed just lately that whenever my car is in 1st/3rd/5th gear (being the upper located gears), that there is a light metalic whirring… it sounds just like a cd spinning when its first loaded. That’s initially what I thought it was at first!.. It’s not serious sounding, but I’m always paro and would like to catch any problems before they arise… Is this a symptom of a flywhell needing to be resurfaced?.. or please god no, my clutch going bad?

Any thoughts??
Thx
James

bah, changing a clutch in a 240 is no big thing really, just get a good mechanic, i think its 4 hours labor

if it was your flywheel it wouldnt prefer making noise in some gears as opposed to others.

i honestly dont know but i gave up trying to figure out every funny noise my car made a long time ago.

My advice? Get some good speakers…

Wow, this is the kind of blatant ignorant advice we really don’t need.

When I started my clutch swap, there was nothing more then a whole lot
of false information and advice floating around. Enough to make you
question more then once what you are doing is actually right or wrong.

Given the parts, tools, assistance and know how, sure a clutch job can be
done in a few hours. But for a beginner, make sure you have a weekend
prepared. There are several parts involved in doing a proper clutch swap
which you will not have readily available.

I’m currently doing my clutch swap (started mid-Jan and still not done).

I’ve pretty much documented all the crap I had to go through and I’ll
probablly post a writeup so others don’t have to go through the crap I did.

If you have the $, get a mechanic to do it. My guess is they’ll easily
charge you $500+ for a clutch swap.

Are you running a short shifter?

Are you 100% sure that it’s the clutch?

I dont see what i posted that was ignorant- my mechanic said he can change the clutch in 4 hours and has done it before in this time. Your guess of $500 to have it changed is about right as long as the clutch is bought for about $150 meaning labor at around $87 per hour… I think you might find cheaper labor than that.

release bearing ?
