This is part of my shop build thread but didn’t want it to get lost / overlooked. I need to bring conduits out from my house to supply the following:
Electric
Gas
Cold (and possibly hot) water
Data
Cable
Surveillance video cable
I’ve heard you shouldn’t run cable / data near main power in walls. Not sure if this is an old wives tale or not. Don’t see a problem separating once inside the barn but what about in the conduit? I’d like to run as few as possible and would only consider combining the H/C water in one and electric / data / cable / camera in the other. Also planning on combining all conduits in the same trench 42" deep, mostly because of the water. Thoughts?
Cold Water = Direct Burial, then get a small on-demand or small regular water heater and put it in the shop.
Gas = Direct Burial
Electric 120/220V = direct burial if you get the right cable, otherwise it’s own conduit.
Low Voltage Electrical = Conduit.
I’d separate it, you really don’t want to dig it up because you have constant 60hz noise. It’s not like making the trench any wider is that much more expensive.
Get the direct bury electric cable and put the water pipe between it and the datas.
FWIW we keep all low voltage/communication wire in separate conduit from 120+ in our industrial applications. A recent install even required two pieces of conduit be moved further from each other as the interference was giving us faulty signals from a level sensor.
Here are the details. You do not need plenum cable as plenum cable is just a low smoke jacket for use in, you guessed it, Plenum ceilings. Basic Riser will suffice.
You will want to run the data in it’s own conduit. The interference from the electrical will cause signal loss and much frustration down the road.
The last trench I did with all utilities in it we went real deep and put the water and gas on the bottom. Some crusher on that and then the power over top. I had no data to worry about.
If you are only pulling out 1 coax and 1 cat cable then 1/2" will work. If there are multiple camera cables then you will have to up size. 3/4 and even 1" PVC are super cheap. IF you have not looked into using cat cable for the cameras instead of coax do it. I am using one pair per camera in a cat6 cable to operate my cameras and it is perfect.
EDIT: If you really want to run all in one conduit you can get shielded cat cable but it is $$.
I was planning to run the data, RG6, and secrity camera in one (unless this is also a bad idea) and the main power in another. The cable I have came with the camera kit I bought and I think it’s be long enough. It comes with both the connectors installed on each end.
The data cable I have left over from a job years ago and would like to use it up. I guess I’m OK with burying the water / gas deeper and bring the rest up nearer the top of the trench. I already bought all the conduit I think I’ll need and just went with 2 1/4" for simplicity. Not like I’m running 600’ or anything like that.
