So, I’m running a marathon June 6th in San Diego and am planning on taking the following week and possibly a few days into the following week to do the much desired Pacific Coast Highway drive. Looking for some help from those who have been anywhere between LA and Portland to offer up some key points of interest, places to not miss out on, etc.
I have friends to visit in LA, Santa Barbara, Chico, and Portland…so ‘housing’ is covered for most of the time. In between those stops I have no idea what’s available for catching some sleep. Not interested in any of those swanky B&B type places as wherever I stay I want to be in and out.
I’ve spent time in SD, LA, and San Fran…so I’m more interested to know about points outside of these cities.
Also trying to figure out what to rent…Wrangler, some shitty convertible???
And lastly, as a shameless plug…I’m raising money for this marathon, if you are one of the NYspeed financial elite and are into donating for good causes, myself and those involved in the fund raising would be appreciative:) http://pages.teamintraining.org/wny/rnr10/mlundeen
Good choice on running the rock and roll series they are great events. I drove the 101 last year basically the same thing but from Seattle through Cali. You probably will not feel like hiking but there are some dope spots out that way. One of my favorite places I have ever been to is Long Beach WA. Stay here for the night http://www.chautauqualodge.com/
It is nothing too fancy but its pretty cheap and request a waterfront room. This area is never that busy you can relax on the beach mostly alone all night. Then go check out the lighthouse area before you leave and scope dead mans cove. It is amazing to see the ocean pouring into the mountains. I love this place so much I plan to visit there this summer.
Nothing too specific about Portland but its a really cool place you will enjoy it. If you have extra days stop over to Seattle I can tell you all types of fun stuff to do there.
Thanks Drew, good shit…will def add this to my list of places to check out. I’m doing the full…I turn 30 in a few weeks so I feel this is the best way to break in that chapter of life:tup: Did 21 miles at 2:55 the other day:)
Wow that is a great time! My training was terrible but I managed to run the full thing around 4:30. I might run another one someday but I am really out of shape right now. I am considering the disney one in January. Anyhow make sure you scope long beach wa it is a perfect place to relax.
Being that the race is in SD, I have to start off there. My plan is to take the 5 straight to Hermosa Beach the evening after the race where I’ll chill for a day or so. Whatever happens from here is where it’s up in the air. I’ve heard between LA and San Fran is good…but from San Fran to Portland is supposed to be best.
I just drove a few hundred miles of the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago, simply stunning but I have a feeling there will be much more traffic in July than there was in March…
theres lots of “pull offs” where the views are stunning, a couple light houses to tour and various other tourist kinda stuff
Make sure you dont run too low on gas as there are long stretches without any stations
If you want a fun drive take 1 to 92 in Half Moon Bay just south of San Franciso. Awesome drive thru the mountains and its thru a state park so plenty to stop off and see.
