you get the idea.
you should have no trouble finding things to explore out here.
I will add all of these to the list, funny to see the common suggestions you just listed to what my buddy who lived in LA for a year just emailed me ha
after talking it over with a guy at work…I’m leaning towards renting a motorcycle instead of a car for the day one of the days and riding up route 1 all day
anyone have experiance with this? it seems to cheap and good to be true
a few years ago before i moved out here i rented a bike but it was from San Diego Harley
also. going up and down the coast in 1 day on a bike is VERY ambitious (assuming youre planning on doing the best part of the 1 which is from San Luis Obisbo to Monterey)
ive ridden from SF down to SD in 1 day and i was basically DEAD afterwards
-Big Bear is pretty close, great mountain and drive. Big bear Lake is awesome.
-Beaches. GO. (LaJolla cove near SD…snorkeling is amazing, or kayaking) South O. county beaches like Salt Creek or San O, incredible.
Whatever you do, do it during off traffic hours or rent a bike. Splitting lanes is fun, but stay safe!
I remember hearing about an anynymous surver done on drivers, and many admitted that they even tried to cut off bikes splitting lanes. I’m not sure it it’s true, but just keep your head on your shoulders and stay alert. Traffic gets really bad at times depending on where you are, and while splitting lanes and jumping to the front of lights is a HUGE time saver, cagers can be deadly.
I took my 74’ honda down to SD for a weekend. It took my buddy in his car 3 hours in Friday traffic to get down. it took me 1 hour 10 min. It was 65 miles. Pretty awesome.
i havent taken the cover off my 911 in 1.5 months…ill prob take it down to SD this weekend but the point is a bike is such a great way to get around out here.
expect traffic. expect to get cut off. expect people to intentionally close up your splitting gap. i generally just ride anticipating that stuff to happen.
as far as your trip up the 1 goes…having done the route quite a few times on a bike this is what i recommend
there is nothing wrong with that idea at all.
what kind of bike are you renting?
also be mindful of your fuel levels as you go from SLO to Monterey.
gas stations are sparse and about 3 weeks ago it was $6.30/gal on that stretch
there is a harley place but havent been able to get prices out of them yet
the bikes I was looking at are:
13’ Ducati monster 696
13’ gsxr 600
they have a few other bikes i would be interested in but not totally sure yet
I have a 03’ monster 620 so im leaning towards the ducati
they have some “cooler” bikes but i would feel much more comfortable a lot quicker on the monster which would allow me to enjoy the ride sooner…if that makes sense
