computer guys- what would cause this?

alright so this thing was working fine last time I used it and afaik it hasnt been dropped or anything

http://bscacad2.buffalostate.edu/~oconpj17/MVI_1636.AVI

as you can probably see, it goes thru all the POST and self tests then just goes to dead signal and the screen starts flickering. It won’t even go into setup

it’s not a monitor problem, it does the exact same thing on 3 known good ones. Its not a floppy/cd conflict because I bypassed all those and it still does it.

what could this be, corrupted bios? bad mb? not detecting plug & play monitor?

for starters… that looks like an 11 year old pentium2.
motherboard, videocard, cpu issue…

correct. 400MHz PII Gateway G6. Our other office comp crapped out so I was trying to get this one going for the meantime

(needs xp downgrade…)

thx for the link and I agree about the xp downgrade

however, buying a new one is not the point of this experiment

anyone?

If your bios was corrupt, usually itll make a bunch of beeping and wont even begin to post like that. Maybe its so incredibly dusty something is just overheating after 30 seconds of use? Tough call on that 1…

Try putting a windows cd in there to system restore. HD might just be bugging out. My buddy had a similar issue, where it looked like it was starting and going to work, then it just shut off when windows starting to load. A fresh install cured it.

Uplug every device besides the motherboard/processor/ram/video card. Unplug the floppy, cd-rom, hard drives, etc.

See how far it gets or if anything changes.

If so, plug just a floppy in and see if you can rum Memtest+

Look at the motherboard itself. Any popping capacitors, etc? Is this a desktop?

It’s so old, maybe it’s just it’s time to fail :frowning:

If the hard drive is failing re-installing fresh on that drive is not going to help. It’ll just happen again and this time it’ll happen even quicker. The best idea would be to replace it if it’s failing. Find a copy of spinrite and put the drive in another machine to test it out.

by HD bugging out, i meant drivers and such when windows was loading not cooperating with eachother. I didnt mean the HD physically taking a shit. Im aware that there isnt much that can be done to save that lol.

My friends issue was switching HDs between mainboards constantly and eventually there were driver issues (or something) and the HD wouldnt load until there was a fresh install.

Then again this guy isnt switching harddrivers around…ah well.

I agree with the memtest and barebones boot as well. Oh the possibilities for an ancient pc!

Is this onboard video?

Have you set the bios to defaults?

For the amount of time you will spend fucking around with this…I am sure you can pick up something a lot nicer for $100 on craigslist.
