Computer Issues F*CK

No AGP slots here. I was going to take the card out of my fiances old comp but it uses AGP.

“almost all of it sounds like a vid card conflict.”
Almost? Please share your thoughts of what else it could be. I’ve checked things over and over.

I do have other PCI slots. I work near UB North.

My mobo - didn’t buy it here so its not refurbished

well i would suggest pulling that card and uninstalling it from the system and installing the new one, have it in for a few days and see what happens, if it works out that ur not seeing these problems anymore then u should return ur card and shop around for a new one, if its the same symptoms then its just not the vid card, if its different things going wrong then it could be a bunch of other things. Ill be around this afternoon after 3 oclock, ill pull it from the computer when i get home.

Will you be around tomorrow after 5? I have to get home right after work tonight.

EDIT: I’m also going to try a few other things tonight. I just thought of some other stuff that I might be able to adjust.

yeah i actually get out of class right at 5 oclock and ill be going straight home

Sweet.
I’m Jason by the way. PM me and let me know where I need to go. Thanks.

What about a failing power supply? Someone had mentioned that it could be that.

Personally, I think it sounds like a power supply issue, or some type of overheating issue. I think it DOESN’T sound like a video card issue.

What makes you think its a power issue.
The power supply is the easiest thing for me to return since I bought it at CompUSA and not Newegg.

The randomness of the crashes…

Do you have another computer and a switch/router? If so, I would try running your computer without the video card installed and just let it run for a while… Every so often I would use the other computer and ping your new computer… If it eventually stops replying to your ping’s then you have ruled out your video card issue.

Please explain how I would go about doing this.

I have a wireless router for my laptop and I have my old desktop plugged into that router right now. The old desktop is very old though. I mean Windows 98 old.

Ok, here is what you do… Find the IP address of your new computer… Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig (sounds right, I am not on a windows box atm). Write the IP address down. Now turn it off, pull the out the video card, and turn it back on. Do not turn any other computer on/off during this process otherwise you will end up with a different IP address from your router. Now after a minute or two go to your old computer and go to Start -> run -> command. At the prompt type ping <insert_ip_address>. You should get a reply of a time in ms. If you get an error like “destination unreachable” it probably means one of two things… Either your computer already crashed, or your computer obtained a different IP address… To see if it is the latter, try logging into your router and look for something like “attached devices”, and in there it should have your new computers IP address. Now every once in a while go to your old computer and ping your new one… If you stop getting ping responses than you can be sure your video card isn’t the problem…

The only problem with this is that you aren’t putting really any load on your components, so hopefully a load isn’t needed… There are ways around this however… you could for example put farcry in your startup folder with some command line options to run it in demo mode or something…

And for everyone else, yes, I realize this isn’t the most efficent way or anything…

this is a very good idea also to troubleshoot without a vid card, i didnt even think of that. Also i dont forsee this to be a powersupply issue. If it were only crashing when u play farcry then i would say definitely it could be. But if it is just randomly crashing then i would say that it probably isnt, im sure that the power supply is giving the computer more then enough power to keep it from crashing.

Its possible that the power supply is bad.
I thought that this was a RAM issue at first because of the way the computer would crash doing just routine things.
If I had a bad power supply, wouldn’t it cause the computer to reboot automaticly? There are too many things that I think it could be.

BuickGN said that the bad Video Card could cause my random freezing. Everything seems to point to the VC. I just want to be sure before I put the extra cash into a new (better) one.

well yeah ur right, u do have to be sure, thats why u gotta borrow one for testing, the other suggestion for pinging is just about the only other way to troubleshoot it

a bad PS will cause random reboots also.

Everything will cause random reboots.

Take the card out first, if it’s not that, move on.

fuck winblows will cause random reboots all on its own also.

for the 18th time.
