Been there, it sucks but guess what a dying family member doesn’t give you the right to break the law, and not stop when a cop goes to pull you over. Did the cop go to far, certainly BUT had mr nfl kept a level head and NOT ran a redlight he probably would have seen his dying love one.
personally i think mr nfl DID keep the level head given the situation cause i would have taken that guys head off… yes, he ran a red light, but i think common sense got left at the station for that cop that night
Found this on ESPN this morning
Another allegation has surfaced against the officer who prevented Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats from entering a hospital to see his dying mother-in-law last week.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Maritza Thomas, wife of former Cowboys linebacker Zach Thomas, was handcuffed and spent approximately three hours in jail after Dallas officer Robert Powell pulled her over for an illegal U-turn in July 2008.
I’m not saying the cop wasn’t a dick, but after running a red light you don’t keep driving with a cop trying to pull you over regardless of the situation. Had he pulled over immediately, and explained the situation I’m willing to bet the cop would have been a lot more understanding. That’s just my opinion and having lost a loved one in the hospital without getting to see them first I can understand the sadness/frustration bit that still does not give you the right to just ignore common laws. Had he waited at the red light would he have been too late?
again your head is in your ass. when they are still alive you don’t know if he had the time…it’s easy for you to sit here and say that after the situation but not knowing and real life situations have effects on people in diff ways.
Hmm guy runs a red light…ends up at the hospital doors, shouldn’t the first thought of this officer be “hmm maybe this guy (or girl with him) hurt or something” not “get your registration out while I draw my gun”…
To Protect and Serve or Patrol and Shit On?
Realize he did not blow through the red light at 90mph or cut anyone off. he basically treated it as a stop sign rolled through it and never made a complete stop. yes running a red light but he did not disregard the safety of others or become reckless. cop was a dick nothing else to say about that. saw this on another show where a man was speeding at about 15 mph over the speed limit to get to the hospital because his wife in the passengers seat was basically giving birth at that time. cop held them for almost 20 mins before following them to the hospital. people can be idiots.
I missed seeing my grandpa by 15 minutes so don’t give me your bullshit. I could have easily sped and ignored traffic devices to make up that time but I didn’t because it’s not an excuse. I think the cop definitely took it too far, and totally could have dealt with the situation better but that doesn’t give Moats an excuse to take none of the blame. It’s called being responsible, something that both the cop and Moats needs to work on.
This thread has turned absurd beyond anything. Let’s make a poll. Three options: Douchebags arguing for the sake of arguing while defending an immoral racist cop, douchebags arguing that somehow this is only relevant because they briefly mention he’s an NFL player, and people who have ethics.
all hail the almighty traffic control devices?
exactly…In times like that where 30 seconds can mean the difference if you are still safe about getting somewhere fast then whats the big deal. I mean whatever give the guy a ticket, nobody said he shouldnt get any ticket, but there was no need to hold him up even longer. It could have been dealt with afterwards.
Fiend you should become a cop and pull some shit like this. Then maybe we can read about you getting suspended from your job for being a dumbass.
Typical nyspeed response without actually reading the post. I DON"T CONDONE THE COP’S ACTIONS, for the 4th time. I also don’t condone the nfl players actions. I have been in similar situations when facing a death in the family, that doesn’t mean you can ignore laws put in for the safety of everyone.
btw, if the post about the officers prior accidents are true, he should have been taken care of then, instead of leaving him on the force. I also wouldn’t become a cop because they don’t make enough. ![]()
The profession of law enforcement attracts those most likely to abuse the power given to them. I really feel that we need to raise our standards for hiring police officers as well as begin to hold them more accountable for anti-social, unprofessional actions.

Give them most responsibility and hold them more accountable for their actions but pay them more.
Like teachers
Cop should be hung the old fashion way in the middle of the town square where people can throw shit at him right before the rope snaps his neck.
X…
In November I got a phone call that they just found a brain tumor on my grandmother and they have no idea how much longer she would have, I got there as quick as possible.
Rolled through stop signs/red lights, and was speeding the whole way there. I didn’t disregard other people’s safety, but you will do what you have to when dealt a situation like that.
The cop should have realized something was wrong after he went through the red light and pulled into the hospital at the front doors. Dickhead cop.
Wow that sucks. Total Bullshit.

I’ve done similar things… I’ve driven to the hospital when I got a call about a relative that was brought into the ER in unknown condition, but “not good” is what I was told.
You bet your ass I got there as fast as possible. I’m sorry, but in my eyes, rolling through a red light safely, or stop sign, or speeding (maybe 30-50 over is a little excessive, but I did it anyways) is “against” the law; but we ALL break laws everyday for no reason… at least I HAD a reason…
aaaaaaand hes gone…
