Did you get anywhere with the start up time?
it is normal to take about 2 minutes for vista
u can try turning off Aero…
do you have a printer installed?
from the time u can 1st see your desktop background… it should take about another minute for everything to load (assuming there is security software)
If you setup the drives in a RAID 0 then you should be showing 2TB of HD space. If you set them up in a RAID 1 then you would be showing 1TB of space. From the sounds of what you’re saying I’d guess something is configured wrong in either the RAID setup or possibly your memory timings.
:word:
woops I missed that part…
That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking…
plus why do you have 2 1TB’s setup as a raid 0?!?!? Seems risky to me.
If you’re looking for the speed improvement with a RAID 0 setup, get 2 small Raptors or Velociraptor 10Krpm drives and use those for the OS with the TB drives as storage; A LOT safer than having 2 TB’s of data shit the bed and loose everything if you loose a HD.
That’s what I did, 2 150G 10Krpm Raptors in a Raid 0; for the OS and programs; with a bunch of other large drives for storage.
I am guessing he accidentally wrote RAID 0 and meant RAID 1…
Truth. In my new machine I’m setting up 3 1TB drives in a RAID 5 for storage and using a single 150GB VelociRaptor for OS duties.
Slightly OT, but seeing as we’re on the RAID topic, anyone played with RAID 10 at all? I’m installing my first RAID 10 server this week.
I would love to see benchmarks about how much quicker RAIN 10 is then RAID 5 with similar drives
I’ll see if I can get some benchmarks before I go live with it.
Who came up with the RAID 10 idea?
You really don’t see a lot of places using it…
Ya apparently RAID 10 is the new hotness when it comes to server setups and my boss and our “consultants” came up with the plan and left me to make it all work. I get no say in the design, just go make it do stuff. I’ve never come across a RAID 10 so it’ll be a new experience for me. From all of the articles I’ve read it seems like RAID 10 has advantages over RAID 5. I guess I’ll find out soon. lol
I would guess someone blindly tossed raid 10 is leet lets use that out there…You don’t see people look into the type of data and raid cache size and a lot of other variables to find out what truly is the “best” solution
That’s my guess. With any luck someday they’ll include me on the decision making.
RAID1… why the hell was I thinking 0?
BTW - No, I haven’t found a solution yet. I’ll wait until after the LAN party to play with it… it works, and I’m leaving it that way.
I didn’t have any virus software until about 5 minutes ago. I DL’d a NO DVD fix for COD WaW and it was a fucking virus. I didn’t even run the fucking thing and it opened over 200 IE windows… until I logged off and went back in. AVG is scanning 500GB of data right now.
After 24 minutes it is still in my winsxs folder. I really wish my CPU would be tasked more for this stuff… seems like it just idles all the time. I don’t think it has gone over 10% yet.
Granted after about 20 minutes it was through almost 1,000,000 files.
31 minutes to finish… nothing found. Interesting. Maybe I just got caught in a loop on that site… dunno. I guess 30min to scan that much isn’t so bad.
Another thing I’m noticing…
Windows Defrag… I started it at 10 last night. It is still running.
Does the RAID also play a role in that? I’m gonna search the defrag post from a little while back and DL something from there.
First, what are the specs on your HDDs?
Second, the hardware RAID controller may not be the best and could be contributing to the slowness. What are the specs on the RAID controller?
Third, it takes awhile to scan and defrag 1TB of space. I’m not sure how long it should normally take but 10 hours does seem quite long.
Raid 1 is going to run slower… just because of the way it is… 10 hours does seem extreme, depending on how much crap you have on them…
I ran an O&O Defrag… and it only took 4 hours. Windows defrag never finished.
It is 500GB of data on 2 1tb drives… so I assume it is actually defragging 2tb of space.
These are the HDDs:

have you even fully loaded the system up to make sure everyhting is working properly? try some prime while monitoring it with core. even run memtest. I know vista is a hog and all but that doesn’t explain the load times. have you oc’d anything or played with any bios settings to tweak your performance?
only bios mods were for the raid.
