Couple problems on the new comp I'm trying to work through

Rig -
i7 920
XFX X58i MOBO
6gb 1600mhz OCZ RAM
1220W Kingwin PSU
(2) 1TB HDDs in RAID 0
GTX 260 216 SC (my GTX 295 ships on the 2nd)
Logitech G15 keyboard
MS V5000 wireless mouse

Vista x64, fresh install.
All of the recent drivers (that I can think of)

First problem -
From a Shut-Down until my cursor is ready to open applications is almost exactly 2 minutes. My P4 machine booted up in less than a minute. I tried changing the msconfig boot setting to utilize the 4 core than the 6gb memory on boot, but so no difference at all.

When I start the stopwatch -
12 seconds in my XFX MOBO screen flashes for 2 seconds.
Black
From 32 until 43 seconds in I get the Welcome to Windows bar
From 1:18 until 1:21 I get the Windows orb
No login prompt (no password on account) and then after 2 minutes it is done loading the desktop.

When I put it to sleep:
Takes 42 seconds to finish loading the desktop.

Second Problem -
My keyboard is plugged into the MOBO for USB 2.0. My mouse is plugged into my keyboard. They take forever to “turn on”.

Once everything is up and running, it flys… just takes a couple minutes to get there.

Ideas?

I’m really leaning towards the RAID… those take time to initialize right?

Software raid or hardware raid?

Hardware would initialize long before the OS even loads…

I assume your P4 machine was XP?

Solution, never turn it off…

My Vista laptop I always just put it to sleep because I am too impatient to await for shit to load.

On the 2nd part…If you can enter the bios from the USB keyboard they obviously don’t take “forever” to turn on.

I believe software?

My MOBO has RAID SATA ports, which I believe are being used correctly, and the fact that I have (2) 1 TB drives and I’m showing 1 TB of total space, and showing 2 drives (channel 0 and channel 1) I think the RAID is functioning.

I don’t know if it is setup correctly for sure though as this is my first RAID application.

I should have been more clear. With the G15 it has a built in LCD with an interface, right on the keyboard, these functions are “off” and the backlighting on the board is “off” until about 1:30 into a boot.

The raid you have setup is hardware based…The raid set would have to initialize before the computer would even boot.

I would imagine this is something to do with windows loading a driver…

If you enter the bios on boot does the LCD light up?

k.

So if it isn’t the HDDs… WTF is taking so damn long?

Let me try.

No lcd. no backlight.

num lock light is the only thing lit… indicating power.

Windows probably loads some driver which allows these other functions to work properly…which is why it takes so long.

Try disabling system restore? Maybe its taking forever to create a startup restore point?

start pulling parts off of it until it stops taking so long, then by process of elimination you will find out what is causing it.

I can understand that if I was in windows… while it was loading the drivers, but it takes so long to even get that far. People on lesser computers are getting in from a dead PC in about 30-32 seconds.

That seems like a valid approach.

I did that for a no-post problem. The quick reference guide for the MOBO said to use 2,4,6 for 3 dimms in triple channel. Turns out it is supposed to be 1,3,5. That didn’t take too long… but what a pita.

The G15 doesn’t light up until windows fully loads. I have the same keyboard and the same thing happens to me.

Maybe I shouldn’t run my mouse through it? I’m sure as it is loading the drivers for the board… it is loading the drivers for the USB?

Are you running your mouse through it?

No those USB ports on the G15 aren’t hi-speed USB ports. I wouldn’t recommend them for anything except maybe thumb drives.

I didn’t know that. I’ll re-arrange pre-LAN.
