I was wrenching on a CTS of my friends this weekend that needed the gumbo/flex discs installed on the drive shaft.
This is a fairly easy job that I looked up online and it seemed really straight forward. All the DIYS say you need to pull off the exhaust, which you do not! I worked around the exhaust of the 2003 CTS with no problems. I removed the entire drive shaft while leaving it in place. The entire job took about 3 hours in my driveway on jack stands.
Easy job that you can do after work in an evening.
Jack up car
remove all flex disc bolts
unbolt center drive shaft bearing
pull out drive shaft to clean or leave in car
install new flex discs
put car on ground
good to go!
Just posting this so if someone in the future searches it they can see that you do not HAVE to remove the exhaust. It is tighter with it on but it is definitely doable.
