Although you didn’t follow the law in your case either, whoever modified or replaced the odometer in this story did so with intent to defraud (since it went right back up for sale) possibly with multiple parties since according to the DOJ stats say these are rarely one-off cases.

Problem in his case is almost every state requires an odometer disclosure statement be signed at the time of sale. Knowing that the odometer is wrong puts you in violation the minute you sign. With all the data out there between carfax and other similar services you’re better off just disclosing the odometer issue.

tpgsr. He’s doesn’t have intent to defraud in simply replacing a broken cluster, but when he sells the car if he signs that statement that the odometer is correct and he has no knowledge of it ever being altered that’s going to put him in violation. Chances of being prosecuted for such a thing? Probably almost zero. You’d probably have to sell it to a US attorney then have something go majorly wrong with it and piss him off. 
Who gives a fuck, it’s a Camry. 200,000, 500,000, or 79,000 they run like a champ. Fuck Channel 4 for actually covering a shit story as trivial as this.
Well using tpgsr as an example, he (or whoever installed it) is mandated under the law to:
Sec. 32704. Service, repair, and replacement
-STATUTE-
(a) Adjusting Mileage. - A person may service, repair, or replace
an odometer of a motor vehicle if the mileage registered by the
odometer remains the same as before the service, repair, or
replacement. If the mileage cannot remain the same -
(1) the person shall adjust the odometer to read zero; and
(2) the owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach
a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle specifying
the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the
date of the service, repair, or replacement.
So even before he sold it he would have had to abide by this statute. In a perfect world of course.
Exactly, but tpgsr’s case isn’t what they’d pursue anyway. They’re looking for volume and multiple counts / violations.
See my point above the quote. I doubt the story would have run if there wasn’t more than one potential person effected. Looks like the guy has been selling a few cars out of his driveway. The news report might alert others who may have purchased cars from him in the past.
So a Customer came into my work about 3 monthes ago and this scumbag drilled 2 holes in the trunk to run power wire for a system…well he just so happens to hit the gas tank… not once but twice. Idk this kid has had no brains… he used to hotwire cars in potter road auto tech all the time.
I have seen him drift across intercetions in rush hour traffic and nearly hitting pedestrians. He deserves every last bit of punishment and im sure theres alot more that we dont know. he just got out of jail for stealing a radio out of my friends car and started smashing it in the street… Like WTF:tspry: poof be gone

What I said did come out wrong. I was trying to say that with what’s going on in Egypt and other more important issues globally, fuck channel 4 for covering something as trivial as a scumbag like this. That said, I hope this asshole gets run over by a bus as now when i sell a legit 50k mile car that is perfect, I’m going to have to hear people reference this story:madfawk::madfawk::madfawk: When people tell me the miles seem too low, I tell them I jack the car up and put a brick over the gas pedal for a few months in reverse to take off miles:fail:
