Shawn, why are you bringing this up again. You’re such a fag.
IP Ban’s are not the best method… How hard is it to change your IP?
I find that I don’t spend as much time as I used to moderating the forums. I do put in at least 10-30 minutes a day and the odd day I’ll get 1 hr or none at all.
ive never selectively lifted a ban for anybody
if 4 people are involved… they all get temp banned for the same amt of time and that ban sticks for everyone
i cant be on this site 24 hours a day just to make sure the BS stays off it.
a lot of times it’s like monitoring children. well, this isnt fuckn preschool or a daycare centre. if it was solely up to me i would permanently ban a lot more people - but this isn’t “my” club or “bings” club. we run it because we are in a good position to run it. we do it because we love the cars and we love the community.
and, sean, if we actually ‘did something about’ all the people acting like 15 year olds on the site, you’d be permbanned a long time ago.
so, we COULD go that route… but it would probably eliminate a quarter (or more) of our member base and that’s just not something we think is beneficial to the club.
it is extremely difficult maintaining a balance between membership levels and maturity – esp when 240s are many people’s first cars. they’re cheap and they’re “in” right now. so we tend to get a younger and poorer and perhaps less knowledgeable member base. there’s nothing wrong with that.
it’s when people start being disrespectful that shit starts to turn ugly. and when people can’t follow simple forum rules.
how fucking hard is it to take two seconds and think!! before you hit the reply button. not that hard. that’s all it would take.
I love you too Shawn.
Just as a reply to Ant’s suggestions, I’d be willing to step up if people want, I’m on here often enough…
But like Mike said, it’s not a day care, mods shouldn’t have to wander around picking up people’s messes. They should be here to step in if they HAVE to. But it’s up to the community to try and not be retards and asshats so the mods don’t have to CONSTANTLY clean and lock threads.
This club is probably brutally hard to run for the exact reason Mike said, it’s a balancing act. If we had every idiot on here banned, pretty much 80% of the people that’ve joined in the last year and a half would be gone. But if everyone is allowed to do whatever the hell they want, then everyone starts bitching and nattering and it’s a big ugly shitpit again…
my .03 short of a nickel.
2gmoney aka dave is the only one that is mature enough.
other than that, leave it alone
If you’re going to chirp like birds you should get banned…
Wow haha thanks Solarian(forgot his name) and Shawn. I doubt I am cut out for it if anything you should be one.
I think the mods do a fine job, never had an issue with Mike and he is a kickass guy to hang with.
probably more like 3/4
quality > quantity
get to bannin’
I believe this is not correct for this case, let me show you why
Quantity :
Bigger community
More members = More sponsors
More active forum
Website worth goes up
Better event info
More parts and cars FS
Plenty of knowledge from various specialty people
I could go on and on
Quality:
Less bullshit
Let us look at this scenario from a Website Owner’s perspective and see which is better
if you’re out to make money, you’re right. more traffic and more sponsors is wonderful.
if you’re out to make a good, knowledgeable community, i’m right. from what i’ve seen, people who actually know things tend to avoid BS and drama.
what’s son’s goal?
Even as a member that is wonderful. The parts increase, cars for sale increase, Vendors who deal 240 parts increase, discounts at vendors and more…
They can try as hard as they want to make a good, knowledgeable community drama and BS will still happen, no stopping it.
The best I think we could do is kinda let the kiddies play while the better members already know whats going on, they act mature about it usually, chime in and than enjoy the benefits.
We should let this thread get back on topic.
i say just open the drama section to everyone and stop locking the threads.
if you have a place to be an asshole it stops poping up all over the FS and such.
other than that im at a loss of what to do, coming on here is fun in the sence that you can get a kick out of some newbs incompantince or buy some parts.
everyone knows son is only any good for the class. section. other than that… garbage. thats what needs to change
pete you know i love yeah but iv also seen what happend when you were a mod.
im not going to lie about anything this is what i think, and thats why im saying it.
dan, do you have anything constructive to add??
I cant believe there are complaints about the mods. This site is run 10x better than most car forums.
Its not your right to be here, its a privledge. If you dont like the way things are run go elsewhere.
Sure there might be room for improvement but its pretty damn good right now and I wouldnt personally mess with it
I wouldn’t change much right now either… not with the actual administration anyhow. I think mike does an excellent job moderating. The content of this forum is lacking big time lately but that doesn’t have much to do with the staff.
For the record, Mike/spd-dmn and I are good buddies… we literally talk daily and hang out for one reason or another at LEAST twice a week… he crashes here on weekends often. We basically have sex. I was banned for a week when they were cracking down on posting in FS threads, by mike, just like everyone else was. the only difference between my ban and everyone else’s ban was that I was able to kick him in his nut sack the next day. there is no ‘selective’ moderation here.
i think this fourm is ran VERY good
their are a few members that make is gay… but that is life
mike (spd-dmn) does an excelent job at what he does.
alot of people have to understand that the mods do this on their spare time and dont always have the time to be on this site
more help would be awsome to take a load off their shoulders
…
I myself would love the Oppertunity to become the mod
Other then a few members, the site fine, and serves its purpose - a place for enthusiasts to chat, buy/sell and setup events. Its been stated before but were probably one, if not thee most active car specific forum in Ontario as far as events, track days and meets go. Could we benifit from another mod or two? no doubt, its a big site for one person (for the most part) to moderate.
One thing I think may be benifical is bringing back regional leaders like we had a couple years ago. When people actually know the person behind the computer I think that helps the community as a whoie and could cut back on the e-thuggery and doushe-baggery. Your ego magically seems to get smaller when you know the person your starting shit with can knock you down like a unstable jenga game as opposed to just swinging you 12" e-penish around but happening to hit a stanger in the eye and having your monitor protecting you from reprocussions.
There will always be drama, beef and stupid kids. banning the new kids wont help. Hell the biggest son feud had been with senior members (bing, bob, ian). With this many members not everyone is going to be friends.
I look at 2 different forum styles and I think anyone that has anything to say about this needs to check these 2 out before talking about the topic:
These 2 forums show 2 totally different ways of running things. JDMRides has no need for moderators, everyone gets along despite the fact that everybody is driving different cars.
Vancouver240sx is a more exclusive type of deal. They check your shit and verify who you are before you join, it is setup more as a car CLUB not just an online community.
Ive been telling Mike for a while now that I think the best idea for SON to move forward is to act more as a car club, not as an online rant locale.
On a side (and more relevant) note; The moderators here are not made to babysit. They have lives too. They can’t and SHOULDN’T be responsible to be here 24hrs a day. They close BS threads and ban where needed. I’ve been banned before personally twice in a month by Mike and Gonad, and I know them both, so your stupid little theory of favoritism is completely out of line, Shawn.
maybe enforce memberships for any forum but the classifieds and vendor sections. that way the trading will still be public but all else will be internal. might weed out some of the really young kids until they get enough to pay the membership.
also, everytime there’s a ban, it’s now for something you paid for, which could mean a lot more to others and indirectly force some to start thinking twice before they act. it would also create a more dedicated member base and might filter out some of the casual loafters of the forum who don’t add much anyway.
in my opinion that’s one step closer to becoming a car club while still keeping business related interests intact. i think there should be more incentive to becoming a paid son member. seems kinda aggressive to force something like this but it’s just a thought.
Haha, Dan, this is where your n00biness shows
This was the cause for argument between the people that ran the site waaaay back. Some people wanted it to be more exclusive, others wanted it to stay as a resource for the 240SX community.
The only thing I don’t like, is that so many of the older members are gone. There used to be such a wealth of experience on here, and they’ve been replaced by street racing 16 year olds. Sadly, there’s nothing any of us can do about it, because it’s not like we can show up at their door and be like “hey, post on SON again!” I do think that those that are still here should take a more active role in sharing their knowledge and experiences with the newer members, because there is a decent amount of knowledge on here, it’s just hidden behind posturing and e-thuggery.
a lot of the suggestions made here were already proposed behind the scenes last year… myself and a couple of others did up a huge proposal and andy (the previous president) ended up throwing a bit of a fit because he said I was trying to overthrow him and take his presidency (lol).
Either way, since the change over to .org this place has [surprisingly?] been much more stable and besides most of the threads here being extremely boring and irrelevant there isn’t too much drama going on. If any of you remember back about a year or so things were a lot different here… bing and mike and gonad and roast have done a good job of improving this place
Solarian, I was around for it, and I was all for that idea. That’s why I’m kinda trying to revive it, without putting much of an effort forward though hehe. But ya, Im a newb, it’s ok.
Jammin is on the dot too. Things are way better than even last year. There were more moderators, but less moderation IMO. If the progress steadily continues like it has been in more recent times, I think this place could be a very strong community.
And as much as Mark and others are against the whole hardparking at/to meets… this is what keeps most communities alive. That exact essence of community. The meeting place doesn’t matter, whether it be on a track or at a tim horton’s. The idea is to meet the people in your community and to create a network where everyone knows eachother. Not everyone like’s to track their cars. Some people enjoy just owning them, and I see nothing wrong with that. I’ve never heard of someone having a bad time when the turnout is great at a meet. Everybody has fun.
