Actually my shop teacher Mr. Fini did this about 20 years ago. He has maybe 10 of his super cars. He has 3 jeeps and a mini home made corvette styled car. They are all powered but small (20-40hp) 4 stroke gas motors. He designed and patented a two speed CVT tranny, and generally uses a pinto rear end.
He also made some interesting electric hybrids. He would connect the output shaft of the gas motor directly to a electric motor. You start off with the e-motor, and there is a clutch you manually control that bump started the gas motor. When the gas motor is in use the car can travel up to 55mph and also uses the e-motor to re-charge the batteries. The e-motor is used at lower speeds generally. There is a battery meter that you have to watch, in order to trigger the gas motor then they are getting low.
He is a smart guy that the government screwed. They told him his cars couldn’t be sold mass market and pretty much with the help of big oil company’s money kept him down and unknown.
The cars only cost about 5-7K to build with all new parts. He drove to DC and back on one tank of gas and had more to go.
There has been a few article about him in Artvoice.
The government later offered him 2 million dollars to implement his designs into the hummer to extend its range and he told them to fu@k off.
Cool dude too. He plays the squeeze box and still has his 71’ gto he bought brand new.
I hope you had your tinfoil hat on while writing that.
That’s about what I figured though. Small vehicle with a impractically tiny little motor relative to today’s standards. When you say “jeep” do you mean Wrangler style?
What exactly is a 2 speed continuously variable transmission?
