I found a pretty sweet deal on a used 9" rear end & Denny’s driveshaft.
But, it has the 35 spline axles and a detroit locker.
I know this would be great for traction and durability, but would it really make the car a bitch to drive on the street? Especially with the rear locking and unlocking on every gear shift. I would imagine it would also jump a bit going around tight corners. Does anyone on here run a locker on the street (turbols1?, firehawk853?, etc.)?
I guess I could always buy it and sell the locker, and put in a posi unit…
I have a detroit true trac. my understanding is that a locker is in between a spool and a posi unit. i drove jt76’s spooled car last weekend, and i have to say it wasnt that bad, and the locker should be smoother. if the price is right, go for it
Wow, jt76 runs a full spool on the street? I would think that would tear the axles right out after long enough…
I’m not sure what to do. I want to keep the car as street friendly as possible.
Ya I would say the price is right. Its a ford 9" rear w/ 20K miles, 35 spline axles, detroit locker, 4:11 gears (would probably change these), and Denny’s nitrous ready driveshaft - for $1,500
i have an HD eaton posi, if i did it over again i’d go spool, or in your case a locker is fine. If i’m not mistaken it does not disengage while your going straight or thru gears as you say, it should only disengage going around turns and NOT jump at all, if its jumping its not disengaging. The spool on the other hand might jump or chrip the tire who cares tho jussssssst do it!!
Ya if your autocrossing it would be not safe. As long as your taking it easy on turns your fine, give it time to disengage when your taking sharp turns.
I’ve driven cars with them, and they are ok, but NOISY. When they engage/disengage there is a large bang. At least with the car I drove, but that I was told was modified with a MASSIVE engage/disengage spring in it. They are great for straight-line acceleration, and do NOT nail it while going around corners as you can damage the unit if you nail it when it’s unlocked.
Just driving the jeep around with lockers in it, it sometimes jumps pretty significantly when easing in on the gas. You never know 100% what its going to do, with a spool, its not going to change.
300miles? you must have been beating the SHIT outa them.
i got all last season plus have some left. the burnouts i did at last years open house were >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the baby ones i did in your car. im never easy on my tires
i didnt do one burnout, and didnt beat on them at all, every race was from a roll, hardly any spinning… i think its the spool that is killing them, the hopping sideways and shit around tight corners, i think its shredding them from side to side and that is whats killing them.
