Dilemma: 2871 which housing?

You’ve probably seem my threads in the technical section. Anyway enough tech talk I want to know what you guys think.
Here’s the setup:
Stock S14 SR plus the following mods
FMIC, 60mm throttle body
555cc Tomei injectors + adjustable fuel pressure + Walboro pump
Megan manifold
Greddy turbo extention
Apexi GT Spec exhaust
GT 2871R with .64 internally gated
Apexi Power FC with MAP sensor

Blitz SBC-ID tune to 18psi for 330whp, 91 octane
21psi for 350whp, 94 octane
HKS Stage 2 264 cams + headgasket later for 380 whp
Is this achievable?

The major deciding factor is the turbo, manifold, and turbo extention. I already have all the other parts.
Now, I’m deciding between the .64 and the .86 which Sasha has giving me with the following comments:

2 PSI more to push the same power. Which is quite negligable difference between the 2 housings.
1000 rpm of lag for 20 whp. Not worth it.
Go with the .64.

Sasha probably knows my driving style and suggests me with the .64, but others have been suggesting the .86… I also think that Sasha may be biased as he’s got the .64 himself.

I hardly drift and I don’t need lowend torque, I can live with lag but don’t like it either. Hence the dilemma.

go .86 if your not drifting then its fine

FYI I do all of my driving in this car on the track, grip style. Thats it. However, gripping does need response as well. Thats why I’m asking.

If you’re looking for as much power as possible down the road (You mentioned 380) you definately will have to goto the larger exhaust housing. Even with the .86 though I can’t see it making that much power, especially without 20+ psi. T2 housings are really limited to how much they can flow. I think all the dynos I have seen of 400hp and close to 400hp 2871R’s have been with the T3 version.

Exactly. But since nobody makes a T3 bottom mount other than full race, I dont have the T3 option unless I cut the Megan manifold and re-weld the flange, should I go with the smaller one. i am not ready to spend $1000 on a manifold when I can get it the megan for $100.
Any info as to how much it would cost to cut the manifold and re-weld it with a T3 flange? Is it worth doing?

At this moment I’m leaning small because it’s not what I want to go for a ‘bragging rights’ goal of 400whp. I want a fast car, and 300whp is too little. (well, on my freind’s WRX, but it is also heavier and easier to drive than the 240) 50whp more than 300whp should be good enough, but I want more, just in case. Speed is an addiction!

I want maximum power on pump gas, and maximum power means the .86. But I could also shoot for maximum power on the .64 which should be quite a handful after I add cams.

With the cams, can I hit 360whp on the small one? Bear in mind that I’m on a budget so I’m not going to have forged internals, a nice port job, and other goodies to support it.

Sasha, my hero, where are you? Happy, is your car on the dyno yet?

Here’s a couple links to go over

there’s 7 pages of discussion about it on NEO

dude honestly man

harveys car at 300whp wasn’t that much faster than my car at 240whp. Remember? it got maybe 10 lenghts on the fabi straight and 6-7 on the nelson straight

My car with only 326whp was honestly almost too much power. The way the turbo kicks in with rwd when you’re exiting a corner is very very violent and I can only imagine how much more violent it would be with a less responsive exhaust housing.

By all means go .86 if you want 400. But ask yourself what you would rather, a number or response?

Lastly, i’ll make you a bet right now that you’ll put down faster lap times with a .64 then you will an .86

Yeah. everybody on Neo is saying .86.
The only reason why harvey’s car is slower than yours on the track was because it is much slower in the turns compared to the 240. Keith asked me this today

ok, well, what do u think of harveys wrx with the vf30? laggy? not laggy?
if its laggy definately go small… if its not laggy then go with the
big one cuz it be aroudn the same size…

And I told him: It was laggy. Acceptable lag considering the return (happy grin on face). But the GT2871 is a ball bearing system which is supposed to be fast spool. If the 2871 does indeed spool better then the VF30 then I’ll be happy with the .86.

Don’t forget my next favourate hobby apart from track racing: wangan!!! And no, I don’t want 400. I don’t think I’ll ever reach that number on pump gas. I think I will take the small one but dislike the hp dropping up top on your dyno. It’s got nothing to do with the turbo right? It was maxing out the cams right?

PS Harvey’s car lags even on the highway compared to the tiny T28.

Oh yeah lets not bash his car cuz he does read this forum and he’s got my favourite WRX…

OK I think I answered the question myself.
I’m going with the .64. I’ll find the power in the cams.

Bing where are you? When are you going to show up with my snaiL?

i love harveys car dont get me wrong, but it wasn’t THAT much faster on the straights than my car. Put a 300whp S14 up beside it and that thing would get shillacked so hard its not even funny. What do they weigh, 3300lbs? point is its heavy and the fact that its awd makes it seem slower
You wanted about 50whp more than harveys car you said right? So there you go the .64 is exactly what you’re looking for from the sounds of things.

my tq dropping off in the high end is a combination of lots of things, cams intake manifold and exhaust manifold but the biggest thing is the exhaust side of the turbo. if you want to flatline the TQ curve all the way to 7500+ you do need the 86. It’ll never be flat unless you do that.

It comes down to preference man, in an ideal world youd be able to drive both identical cars that were tuned identically running identical boost and see which one you liked more. but, you cant.

I guess my big point is that the driveability from the .64 is much more fun than the extra 20-30whp from the .86

.64 is a good decision i think though dude

Quincy, from my understanding the word on NEO is to go for the .64

Nave wanted the .86… but he always goes big!

GT42 on a 2.0L for the win.

How about GT35 on a 1.3L?

Nope - have dyno time booked for Friday April 15th.
