A full set of UUC Calipers. Here’s the way the Calipers looked when I bought them…
I had to strip the original Powdercoat off and then I had the engraving machined off. I called the manufacturer to see if there was enough material to be removing the face of the brake like this. They said there’s enough face tolerence to grind it down once, just incase they screw up the engraving themselves at the factory. (That’s my disclaimer for those who question this act)
Then the calipers were masked off and powdercoated Gold!
Cured Gold:
Then… the color i absolutely LOVE… ugh. Candy Apple Red. This is a translucent red which will show the gold through this color. I could have sprayed silver for the first coat, but i wanted it to be a darker ‘blood red’ color, so a gold base color will do the trick.
Cured Candy Apple. You have to see this color in person, it’s very irredecent and it’s hard to capture it’s color.
[QUOTE=LAFENGAS]I though the color would go well with my gunmetal rims…so that was the first thing i had to do.
more pics to show how the color looks so different under different lighting.
I sent the CAD file for the “///LAFENGAS” logo to the engraver to have it laser engraved. The machine wasn’t built to do items so large. I had to machine some block spacers so the machine would sit high enough to clear the caliper. neat process.
and finally installed:
It was a fun project and for those who wish to do something similar, I’ll help you out. However, the most import thing is to have a nice flat surface on the face of the calipers. Hope this gives some ideas on being creative. It’s a lot easier when people know what’s actually involved and what’s processes are available out there, like the engraving for example.
reading your DIY threads is like watching a good movie or something, these should seriously ALL be stickied for a genuinely good, informative read
I will be doing something similar to my Calipers… but with Formula & or WS6.
I can do the powdercoating now (Well in a week, I just picked up a free oven that I can use to do powdercoating, and have the kit W/powder on order); and have the capability to do the laser work here at work (Don’t think I can offer that to the public though).
Bummer, I was hoping you had gone ahead and done my next project, custom BBK. Going to fab my own brackets and hats, and felt like copying rather than continuing all of this hard work!
They look amazing though. Nicely done Josh! When do we get the supercharger writeup?
