DIY: Headlight Restoration

Bump, did this today and worked well given the fact that I didn’t use a buffer. Pics don’t do them justice as to how poorly they were before. They’re definitely not perfect in the after shots, but I didn’t do the last step either with the mineral spirits and spar urethane mixture. I wanted to see how this would go and how long it would last.

Is there a noticeable change in night driving and output since this has been done?

I’ve done this a few times, but only using those kits and never noticed if there was a noticeable difference or not.

Wow looks good

this is exactly what I was just looking at doing

I did this to my TL and I could notice a difference at night for sure. The HID’s are so much brighter now.

Dang, your making me want to do mine now

Hard to tell since the sun hasn’t gone down yet lol. I literally did this right in the middle of today. I don’t see how night driving couldn’t be better with a clearer lens though. More than anything I was looking to just clean them up.

Thanks! Again, I did this without a buffer so I’m sure it could have been better. I decided to do a couple rounds of rubbing compound and then polishing compound before putting a little coat of wax on at the end.

$20 worth of supplies and you’ll be set for multiple cars or applications. I just finally found the time during the few days I had free this week to finally do a quick cleaning and detail to our cars.

I sold a guy an 05 4Motion Passat wagon where the lights were yellow. I buffed them out and even put in thos silver star bulbs at his request. I was SO excited to try them out the first time at night after I did them. NO difference at ALL-I was so bummed. It did make the front end look much younger but I really was bummed when I hit the lights.

I’m going to have to give Motocross’s method a try-using the cordless drill with those kits works ok but it always lacks that last 5% to make it look awesome. On most Subarus/Nissans/whatever Asian cars I get-I can just use that $6 scratch out in a yellow bottle on a rag and make the lights look amazing but on VW’s the headlights seem to really get yellow and it goes deep in the plastic.

Update for tonight’s drive- from what I could tell it appeared to have a wider scope of light than previously. I don’t think the depth of light changed, but I definitely felt my field of view left to right was much better.

My Accord needs this.

When I picked up my new headlights I got a bit of a discount on them because they were kind of foggy.I spent about 5 minutes on them and less than 10 bucks with rubbing/polishing compound + wax and they seriously look brand new.

I tried the same on my stock headlights and it didnt work. I think they need some light sanding and an actual buffing wheel on them

Even if it doesn’t help visability, they sure do look better !

I’ll get motivated and try this on my Golf headlights. They’re not yellowed yet, but hazed.

So I bought an 05 Passat this week at auction and the headlights looked like the inside of a smokers house when you move the pictures that were on the wall to repaint the place after they kick the bucket. They were beyond hazed and had adopted the color of manilla filing folders but not as see through. They were the only thing letting the car down. I had one of those kits from a bit back and went to town on them.

Here is what I started with

I used the 500 then the 800 grit sanding discs and then on to the 3000 grit to finish them. The 3M polish that was in the kit was gone so I used some $6 a bottle Kitt Scratch Out on the polishing pad

Here is the finished result

Side by side

They look almost brand new and for the short amount of time I spent, the front end of the car looks great. I still want to try the method described by the OP but for now this is pretty good. Followed up by a generous application of Gold Glass to protect them and it’s good to go.

How happy am I with the way it turned out? Very happy. As happy as this guy below?

Well no, I’m still a miserable prick.

… who didn’t pull out.

3m makes a wet sanding kit that I have been using lately. Works great… Quattro those came out excellent

Bump, quick 10 minute job on the Corolla. Not excellent but good enough for me with the little effort I put in. The driver side definitely needed it, passenger side not so much so the difference was really negligible there.

I’ve used various products to clean up the lenses but haven’t found anything so far that works to keep them for on dulling within 6 mos. A few products claimed to have UV protection in them but obviously didn’t.

I’ll have to try the Spar.
