dmv question

How do I report plates lost or stolen? Let the kid that bought my jetta drive home on them and like an asshole is not answering me if he mailed them back or not. Just gonna report them lost. Thanks.

Go to a police department and say you need an MV-78b to report your plates stolen, have them fill it out and bring it to the DMV.

Cool. Is there another form to just say that I lost them? I really just want to get the insurance off the car ASAP.

Technically you can get a notorized affidavit stating you lost them but alot of offices are pricks about accepting them, so your best bet is the 78b

No idea where he lives?

NO, if both plates are gone you HAVE to file a police report or at least thats what ive been told and had to do in the past, thats why when I sell something and let someone use my plate, I only give them one incase they dont come back or think they can drive with my shit for a week or two before returning… As soon as I hand in that 1 plate, the other is dead… With only 1 plate missing theres a 3 question form to fill out and then pay your normal $1… No police report, no hastle.

lives 4 hours away. Already filed with the police.

not baggin on you, since i’ve also let a buyer drive on my plate in the past… but figured id post up what happened to a buddy who did that

dude drove up from long island to buy his truck, he let the guy drive home on his plates and on the way down the guy totaled the truck at one of the toll booths. the accident went on my buddy’s (the sellers) insurance and was a huge clusterfuck.

I know. That’s exactly why I wanted to get the insurance off. Kid said he was going to mail them when he got home. Texted him today and he said he didn’t mail it out yet. “I’ve been really busy”. Fuck that. That’s what I get for trying to be a nice guy.

Yeah really busy driving on your plates/insurance haha.

I know right? :lol if he was closer I would’ve just went and got them.

When I sold the R33 and the S4, I let the buyer drive home on the plates, BUT I also made them fill out a contract explaining that they have the plates on the car for purpose of transport, but the plates are registered with that car and the buyer has their own insurance. It may not be much, but it will help cover your ass a little bit.

I’ve been on both ends of this situation. I’d advise the buyer that the insurance and registration are cancelled and the plates are getting filed as stolen. At least he won’t be out freeriding, even if he gets pissed.

I’d call him and get him on the phone first and get his story, and make sure he knows you absolutely need the plates back asap.

“not having time” means this assholes out driving around with franks plates/insurance… Would gamble money on it.

Like I said. I already filed them as stolen with the police. I just want to get the insurance off the car. Will be going to dmv tomorrow.

word, well as long as you reported them stolen your not longer liable for the plates.
