We had a goofball customer pay to have his 4 lug cobalt converted to 5 lug so that he could run Cobalt ss turbo rims on his 06 base model automatic.
There were no ABS issues. I’d say you sir are good to go.

Do you know if his car even had ABS tho?
I wanted to simply redrill my hubs to 5X114.5, but the OD isn’t big enough…
I saw that cobalt guys were doing 5 lug swaps using stock parts, which means the hub uprights are the same… and since the elise/exige hubs are fabled to be the same as saturn 4x100 hubs, I think I can get to 5X110… which is only a redrill away from 5X114.5…
I just hope I can fit my rotors over them…
considering that car is TWENTY years old, what area we’re in, the fact that porsche dealer with one porsche tech you called just got bought, sold, moved, personnel from toyota were working there, they moved, i think volvo moved in and all of their employees worth a crap left, you called a kid who wasn’t even a stain in 1990 who may of never even seen an aircooled car in the flesh and gave him an education about the number of pistons on the rear brakes and are now on the internet bitching about it?
This. Plus what Bing said.
This kid probably wasn’t even old enough to shit without diapers when this car was out. It is what it is. Looking up your own part numbers, somehow, is usually the best and I found saves me the most amount of time and aggravation.
I agree with just about all this thread… both the parts guy side and the customer side.
I do know of 1… and ONLY 1 place that still has “parts guys”… still has the stools to sit on and hang out, if they know you enough they just send you in the back to get the parts, etc. Monroe Seal-fast/Carquest in Brockport. My dad went to highschool with the owners and it’s been a family owned parts store for 50+ years. That’s one of the few places where you can walk in, rattle off kinda the part you need and without even opening a book or looking in the computer the guy/woman walks out back and brings the exact part out for you.
assuming u called the porsche of buffalo in williamsville/clarence/wherever it is, there is no offical porsche parts guy… 3 are volvo parts slingers and one LR guy. and they arent the smartest.
edit: ok didnt read the nth degree part. im sorry you had a bad experience. who did u get?
this is alot more common now, than say 5 years ago when i used to call for parts. hell i called mazda a few weeks ago, ordered a headgasket, with the part number , they look it up wrong some how and got me a valve cover gasket…lol… im glad i only have to call for my own parts now…
I mostly blame cost cutting.
Last time I was at the Dodge Dealership the guy didn’t know what camber bolts were and continued to brag about his sweet lowered Mustang as it took him 10 minutes to find the part on the computer. And on a different note; they wanted over $100 for a new timing belt for a Neon which I denied.
Ever since then I just order everything online.
the last gm dealer i worked at was a nightmare to get parts… heres my favorite story,
Dirty: hey i need this tailgate trim piece thats shown in the diagram on these instructions here.
Parts guy: well youre shit out of luck those instructions are in spanish and i only speak english.
Dirty: thats understandable but the diagram is drawn in the universal laguage of A FUCKING PICTURE and im pretty sure the part number next to it is in english…
thats just the way that systems work at parts stores such as autozone and advanced auto
hell you pretty much have to put in motor size in order to figure out what windshield wipers it takes
do you know how much they pay that parts guy? would you rather pay twice the price for the part so that the guy selling it to you is knowledgeable and can afford to work there and still pay his bills? there is flaws in every system and if you want the cheapest price you will usually get the cheaper service by someone who only knows how to look up parts by what the computer tells them to ask you
fyi for people who want shit at autozone they have an online website that will tell you the exact same # it will give the worker, then you can order online or call up the store with the part # and you know its what you looked up

Not to defend them, but Northtown Porsche recently combined buildings with Volvo and Land Rover so it’s possible you got a parts guy from a different brand. I was in there the other day (after driving to the old dealership and seeing the place vacant, WTF) and the parts department looks to be merged between the 3 brands.
I order all my parts from a Dealer in Oregon. I get 15% off and free shipping. I’ll wait the 2 days.
Sorry West Herr…I’m not making 2 trips every time because they give me the wrong part.
I don’t mind yacking with the Autoparts guys. Some are pretty “on the ball” like Bings new “employee” …
Most points made here are valid to some degree. I suppose its just another case of specific knowledge that is going the way of the Dodo, which is a shame to me.
I still think that if you’re selling $70-$150k cars, it’s usually best to have at least one damn good person, with brand-specific knowledge in each department of your store.
And I also don’t think that age necessarily implies lack of said knowledge. Perfect case in point is the younger guy at VW of Orchard Park, Steve. Dude knows his shit for sure. Why? Because he gives a damn about the brand, and it’s more than just a job to him.
I dunno…maybe it was just a bad day.
People who give a damn about their jobs also tend to give a damn about making good money.

some guys are good still…i went into the canadian tire at major mack and leslie area to get an e-test first thing he asked me when he saw my car was sr20? and then he said right away that hed test it as a hot rod without any papers…so i know this wasnt parts but their are people who know something about cars and are trying to help
the guy was probably on SON anyways
lol most likely
James V. @ autozone on camp rd in hamburg knows his stuff very well. I used to work with him. Good guy and will definitely go out of his way to help you out.
As long as you don’t mind autozone quality parts that is…
