Dodge Avenger question.

I have a friend that has a 96 Dodge Avenger with a 2.5 V6. Like most Dodges it won’t run for shit. I got it narrowed down pretty much to either a cam sensor or a crank sensor. Does anyone know off hand the testing procedure for either of these sensors? I’m not one to replace something if I’m not 100% sure it’s the problem so I need to find out which one is bad. Thanks for any help.

The “won’t run for shit” is almost totally Mitsubishi’s fault on that one.

But yeah, “wont run for shit” is very descriptive when you’re trying to troubleshoot. Does the car run at all? Get a check engine light? If it did you could pull the codes.

ok… pop hood… replace oil filter… buy a toyota… put oil filter back on… you have a better car now

I’m not looking to find the problem since I’m pretty sure I already have. I’m just asking how to test the sensors if I’m able to at all. The car does the same thing my old Neon did when the crank sensor went. Starts and runs for a few minutes, get’s a choppy idle, then stalls and wont start again unless it sits untouched for hours. Everything else checks out and this isn’t the first time I’ve run into this problem so I’m confident that I’m at the very least on the right track.

On my avenger it did the same thing. It cut off as i was driving down the road and got worse. Sometimes it would run and sometimes it wouldnt. I replaced the crank position sensor and it worked fine after that.

my sister had the 4 banger version of that car. It was a hunk-o-shit hers had the same problem but we sent it to the junkyard instead of fixing it. Yea, those DSM motors were junk.

exact same thing on my SHO.

Its called Isolate the problem by disconnecting it completely off the car use an ohmeter and check the resistance. While I was at it though I would check on your Camshaft Position Sensor because it could also be contributing to the situation. It sounds like the crankshaft position sensor needs replaced it probably has wire damage or corrosion somewhere or even dirt on the contacts. But yea I’m going to call it and say Crankshaft Position Sensor.
