They should have just pulled it up a little by the roof, enough to get a chain on the frame, then started pulling from the frame.
As was stated earlier, it gets real complicated if you try to hook to the frame first because then it’s an underwater dive, in freezing conditions, under ice. Of course, now that’s pretty much their only option since it looks like the whole thing is under now.
And the kid has been very quiet over on the stuntrider forum. Other than:

I just don’t see why Geico would deny the claim? If you accidentally crash your car, they will still cover it if you have full coverage right? I would assume its the same thing, insurance is different than warranty. I was unaware that they can deny your claim if you have the proper coverage… otherwise whats the point of paying insurance.
Because your off roading…its comparable to wrecking your car on a road course or at the drag strip.

+1 If you honestly think that is going to be covered you might want to read your policy sometime. Now that the kid admitted to the cops he drove out there because he thought it would be “neat” he’s fucked. Maybe if he claimed they were driving near the bay, and in the whiteout made a wrong turn and ended up out there Geico would cover it. But once you drive out on a frozen bay, on purpose, that’s off highway use and most policies have an exclusion.
Something to keep in mind if you like to go offroading at places like Tift.
looks like they flipped it to get it onto the ice, but by the time it was up on end the cable was pulling the backend dow, which would have put pressure on the ice, so they hooked onto the roof at ice level hoping it would slide upward … instead the roof gave way

Ok I guess I missed the part where he said he purposely drove out there. Then in that case yeah he’s retarded, however I thought it was an accident and then decided hey lets have fun.
If it was an accident I can see why but since he admitted he deliberatley did then yeah thats dumb and I can see why they wouldn’t cover it now.
