did you reboot three times?
I could, but I’m cheap and poor
The internet drops out every time the machine runs.
It makes no difference what I do to it physically.
I think I have an old PCMCIA card somewhere…
I’ll try that i guess.
If I could get Knoppix to recognize the card, then I would have known for sure if it was hardware related.

??
sarcasm?
I still have not tried replacing the card, but it works all day long with knoppix running.
It also works if I am logged into the company email/intranet.
Is there some log file I can dig out that might show antything?
This is only happening at work or at home too?
Do you have the latest drivers?
Happens at home, buff state, hotels etc…
I thought it might be the modem, but it does not recover after restarts and Knoppix works fine.
It is a laptop i got from work as scrap and replaced the MB, so I have no XP CD’s to try and reinstall.
So connections are fine in a network but the internet will not work?
looks that way.
Wife can still play some crappy online card game too.
Just can not load any websites.
try doing a “netstat -an” (minus the quotes obviously) in the command prompt. Check and see if port 80 shows up on there. Maybe some virus/malware has closed it?
Without reading it all, my Dad was pulling his hair out for weeks over his new laptop sucking at the internet. I went home to help him with it just to find out that he had set everything up properly but his modem from TW was bad. Got anything else that holds the same connection reliably?
I would have suspected the router/DNS problem but it’s happening wherever he goes…And he can connect to things within a network but not outside of it. Gotta be the laptop/OS
My laptop holds the connection reliably… Just not if i’m runnig XP
Edit: I don’t know the password for wireless at work, so it took forever to get to anyplace with wifi and verify
the problem. As far as XP is concerned, the connection is fine…
I can even tracert websites.
Looks like it is not a problem anymore.
My son knocked it off an ottoman and it no longer powers up at all.
It even shuts down the power supply as soon as it’s connected
RIP
I’ll probably get another MB.
It has a bunch of software I like.
Autocad, Labview, Multisim and the like.
So… I replaced the MB.
Everything works, including the Ethernet port.
But web traffic still falls out after 10 minutes regardless of the connection method. I have read about malware being a cause, but nothing I install seems to find anything.
Any new suggestions other than reinstall XP?
Not that anyone cares, but I fixed it. Only took 18 months to fix it.
Thats about my par for me fixing things. Bumping thread incase of the odd chance someone in the future has a similar problem.
There was some crappy vpn software that was screwed up when the Verizon guy tried setting it up for my wife.
Truevector something or other. Once it was gone, everything runs fine.
So now the wireless won’t even recognize a signal so I’m guessing the card went or is going. It recognizes there is a connection that it can locate but when it attempts to actually connect it fails.
I just hardwired the modem to my laptop and its fine, just cant have my laptop anywhere else in the house.
