DSM and EVO Guys, Need Opinions...

Hey all…

OK, here is the deal, as some of you know, I am trying to address the
weaker points, if you want to call it that, of the motor in my car. Nothing
really power related or anything, just some things common to all motors, I
guess… So, here it goes:

I am looking to replace my exhaust manifold studs with stainless studs so that
I never have to worry about them siezing up. Plus, I am going to have the
manifold off soon anyways for the exhaust install, EGT and porting of the
manifold. So, while I have that off, I was going to pull all the original studs out
and replace with something stainless.

Option 1. I have heard through the grapevine that a little trick of some
DSMers is to replace the studs with stainless bolts, and just thread them
right into the existing holes for the studs. (I bought a stud from the
Stealership to take my measurements and stuff, although they only had
the 8mm one.) I can see this as being ok, only if I am not taking it out on a
regular basis seeing as though I don’t want to strip the holes. (BTW, the
studs are not a LH/RH threaded stud, so I will be able to source bolts locally
easily.) Soo, what I was thinking is to get some socket head cap screws with
lockwashers and polish the ends of the socket heads for more horsepower.
 Option 1.

Option 2. Pick up some stainless threaded rod and duplicate the existing
studs. Obviously polish the flange nuts and washers as well so I don’t
loose any horsepower for not making them bling. This would only duplicate
what is already on there, only making them easier to deal with in the future.
Option 2.

So, to all you DSMers and EVO guys, do you know of anyone that has done
this? I have searched up and down and have never realy been able to find
anything on this. I would really like to go with the Socket Head Cap Screws
mostly because it would look really trick, but if the better option would be to
just replicate the stock setup, then that is what I will do.

Any opinions, good opinions? I don’t want someone to tell me to just duplicate
the stock setup without giving a valid reason… (ie… no flaming or bullshizzle)

EDIT: One more thing, anyone have a 10mm exhaust stud they wanna let me buy/borrow?

get the stainless steel exhaust manifold stud kit from slowboy through hybrid. i got that for my dsm… kinda takes the legwork out of getting the right length/quality from the hardware store.

Definitely get the studs. The section in the middle of the stud w/o thread is what the stud bottoms out on. Any other way and your taking a risk of stripping out the threads.

ricer.

i’d go with this… dunno, i’m a fan of the get the tried and proven parts :gotme:

Yeah, I was just on Slowboy’s site, and they wanted $45 for the kit, which isn’t
bad, but I can get the materials for around $25, then I just have to get it cut to
size… Besides, I don’t like his nuts ( ), I like the look of flange washers better.

Anyone have a 10mm exhaust stud I could use/borrow/have?

I’ve never had a problem with the stock studs on my car or any other DSM I’ve worked on. The only reason I have the stainless studs on the head now is because I had Hybrid fab up a set that is longer for my super thick SBR manifold, so the nuts wouldn’t keep falling off.

If you put bolts in place of the studs, you just run the higher risk of stripping out the hole in the head and then you’re fuxored.

Yeah, stripping out the threaded holes in the head would be my only concern for going with bolts. I figure that I will only have the manifold out probably once a year realistically, so as long as I am careful with them for those few times I will be OK.

The only problem I can see so far with the bolts is getting them to be the perfect length so I can get max thread engagement with the thickness of the manifold.

Maybe I will just go with the threaded rod, and just cut them to the right length…

Anyone else?

Will you also be doing the Manifold to turbo housing bolts? Just a thought… as when I was installing my EGT I happened to snap a stud off in the housing  sucked, car only had 6k on it. It has been replaced with a bolt now. But you are making me think about putting some stainless in there now after the issue I have had thus far…

Jeller

stainless studs would probably be your best bet…as the other guys said

Might anyone be able to get me the Size & thread pitch for the bolts into the turbo housing? While I have it out, I figure I might as well try to get them out and replace them anyways…
