Dunlop workers on strike

from what i know about all this is that that plant is mainly used to make motorcycle tires for HD’s so if they strike and inturn dont produce the tires for them and they lose the contract…all them workers are SCREWED cause they will close that plant right down and just import the tires from somewhere else. This is just what i have heard from a few people that work there…dont know if its true or not. All i know is nowadays unions arent gunna get you very far like back in the day. so i guess people will just have to suck it up and WORK for their money now like i do

first of all, they make more than just MC tires at this plant, 2nd of all this plant didnt even start this strike, this was a goodyear thing, and its about cutting all the retirees benifits and pay.

gonna have to agree with xander on this one, more often than not

From my personal experience with unions (both in one and working with one in managment) i have found that unions protect the weakest workers and prevent the good workers from advancing. Unions keep the workers from being motivated to work hard because no matter how hard they work or how little they work, they receive the same raise every year. And the union will stick up for the worker who does nothing all day and keep that worker from being fired, while the guy who goes above and beyond his job gets no recognition for it because the union contract will not allow for it. So it is in my opinion from MY experience that the workers who favor unions are the ones who want to get paid for doing the least amount possible. The union leaders talk a good talk and get all workers to believe that paying their dues is actually helping them in some way.

These are my opinions from my personal experience. I am in no way saying all union workers or even all unions for that matter are the same.

Being a union employee You are pretty much dead on.95% of what the union does, only affects about 10% of the ppl. They are good for the fact that if a foremna has a hard-on for you,he just can’t fire you.
PPl these days have a hard time realizing that a foreman is only there to make sure you do what YOU ARE GETTING PAID TO DO.Period.
I do stop by there evrynight to see if they need wood or anything for the fires tho.
D

the only useful post in this entire thread.

read it, and realize…that unions will be the death of industry, in this country.

just ask AWDrifter, how much business he has lost overseas…because people want $60 an hour to sweep floors here.

for the lose

.

i’m going to have to agree just the same … unions were of vital importance at one point but they need major revision now a days to work in the modern day working world.

hahaha. with cheap workers outside USA, you guys should be prepared to accept that rate.

face the reality. it’s much cheaper to do everything in China, Mexico, India, etc. with union striking like this, it’s the fact that you guys are killing the company anyway.

no wonder why all companies now want to outsource their factories…union mentality, huh? hehe it’s only about less than .50 cent per hour without any benefit for each worker in china…and workers over here are asking > $50K per year plus nice benefit…

oh man…

Word Word Word.

:word:
accept the reality…

PLUS, they are not doing bad job either (well, under good supervision)

haha. you guys should flip most items in supermarket/target/walmart/etc…how many of em are made in china? lmao.

hahaha… bottom line, unions suck. You can’t argue this. Sounds like you may be in a union? Don’t even bother arguing to me that how unions are the backbone of our economy… i’ll let time play it out when they are all jobless because of the union mentality. It will happen.

The last 5 years have been evident in showing what unions are doing to themselves. Bottom line, times have changed. Unions are the ones that are ignorant, especailly with they think their jobs are irreplaceable

FYI, these comments are about unioins in general, not the Dunlop Union.

:word:

unions are only as good as the people who are the union officials. some suck, some serve a purpose. The union where i work does nothing for you unless you are useless and should be fired.

I have no problem with the unions that represent private industry. After all, in that case the market exists to reward (or punish) their activities. If they make excesive demands, I will buy their consequently overpriced product elsewhere, and so on. OTOH, public employee unions SUCK. I have no choice but to buy their “product”, they have the public over a barrell given their political influence and that they represent a “monopoly” which people are forced to deal with.

private unions = good
public emplyee unions = teh suck

Fixed.

Unions were great back in the 60’s, before the world became a WORLD ECONOMY. American companies could pay a guy 50k a year (in today’s dollars) to stand at a stamping maching all day and still make a profit because they would just charge more for their product. The consumer would still buy it because they didn’t have a lower cost alternative. The local store only sold the product from that American company, so if you wanted it you paid the price. Fast forward to 2006 though and pay the guy 50k and they still have to sell the product to compete with the company that is paying their worker 20k. Make the cuts elsewhere, like in quality or R&D, and hope people don’t notice (read GM, Ford).

Now, you can add a tarriff to help that American company, but it can’t be the ONLY solution. Part of that solution also has to be that 50k just isn’t going to cut it for unskilled labor anymore. Maybe 35k, plus a small tarriff on the overseas product, and everyone wins. The product is a little more expensive, but not so much that it kills the economy. The American company can still hire an American because the tarriff keeps them competitive. The worker makes a living wage, but not the same wage as a person with a masters degree who is constantly upgrading their skills set to remain valueable in the workforce. Don’t like it? Tough, maybe you should pay more attention in school, keep your grades up, and get a degree.

The problem is unions do not believe in the idea of compromise. If we make 50k, that was negotiated, so it has to be negotiated out. Sure, we’ll go down to 35k, but only if you offer something worth 15k. So they refuse themselves right out of a job. The American public won’t get behind the tarriff idea because they refuse to allow a tax to be the entire answer. Why should we all pay a huge amount more for every manufactured good because your union refuses to negotiate? So the American company is left with two choices; go out of business, or move the manufacturing somewhere that allows them to be competive.

So I’ll say it again… Soon to be Dunlop\Goodyear of Mexico.

Nope… Dunlop of China. We heard at the plant they already have plans.May or may not be true, just what we heard.
D

My dads friend works there he said the exact same thing.

All this and the kids keep putting kuhmos on their car.

Very well said.

this is a good example for me to explain about union to other people.

See JayS’s post. Quality product at a competitive price from an overseas company.

Personally, I have never bought (or not bought) anything based on a product’s country of origin.
