goodyear plants on strike

as you know goodyear tire plants are on strike across the nation (from my understanding) so the retail stores are asking for volunteers to go work at the plants at a reduced rate from the regular workers. so me being a gdy employe I also recieve the offer, and from where I stand its a pretty good offer but I will loose a few karma points for sure.

i’m currently making 8.75/hr bringing home between 200-250 a week. their offer is 13/hr or your regular rate which is higher (obviously 13/hr is more than what i’m making now.) also I would be working “aproximately” 60 hours a week + time and a half for 40+

that works out to aproximately $910 a week and after taxes (estamated at 15%) about $770 a week. That is around a 300% pay increase for the duration of the strike. part of the provisions are that your not allowd to work at a local plant if you live in a plant city, so I would have to relocate for the duration of the strike. they will be bussing people up to 10 hours (where necessary) then paying for plane tickets for situations where the travel time is more than 10 hours. GDY will pay for the hotel, lunch is included at the plant for working days, $25 is given for dinner per day (assuming working days only) and breakfast is included at the hotel (we have all been there yuck!).

I don’t know exactly what the job would entale but there is no doubt that I would be bored out of my mind when i’m not at work, and maybe at work too don’t know. I don’t know if they will allow me to bring my own vehicle there (which would be an adventure of its own) or even if I would even want it there. I’m sure the strikers wont be happy about GDY moving workers in. It would definately give me a chance to pay off all of my bills and save up a bunch of money because I wouldent be spending 3/4 of my pay check on gas for the SHO assuming I take the saturn (because protesters can’t dent it  )

i’m just a little tossed as to what to do. and i’m wondering if my pay will stay at 13/hr when I get back (the same job is promised upon return).

seems like a no brainer to be :gotme:

You probably won’t be covered under their union, which Im assuming is why they are striking in the first place, that or a moving jobs over seas thing. I wouldn’t drive any car you care about there because more than likely it WILL get vandalized. I hear about these things all the time due to my step dad working for american axle, and the way they treat “temp” workers. Think about it for a second…your totally hurting their cause. Im sure Ill get flamed for kind of siding with them but whatever…

I was thinking of taking the saturn which will have a new engine this weekend (OMG YAY). so if it gets completely obliterated i’m only out $184 I paid for the engine. I just can’t imagine being there untill january (in the paperwork it said it may go on past that and that we need to be prepaired to work through that)

I definately wouldent be covered under their union. from my understanding they are not allowd to hire new people due to some laws so they can only transfer existing employes?

do it. why not fuck it. people dont want to work and provide for their families step up and do it for yourself

dont do it. Ever since goodyear took over the dunlop plant they’ve been screwing those guys over worse and worse. They have every right to do what they’re doing, and the strikebreakers take away the only leverage that they have. If the strike was in the stores you’d be pretty pissed if the plant guys came in and did your job for $6 an hour, so, golden rule.

their union is paying for them to be out of work (thats the way a lot of unions work it atlest)

your your wondering if you should take a well paying job, making tires, that could take you out of state for a while …

lets break this down

-youll earn a load of cash
-you can steall all the tires your sho will ever destroy
-you dont have to deal with Santa for a while

win-win-win

I havent really been watching what is going on with this can you elaborate?

the regular workers get paid about double what I will be making but the company doesn’t have to pay for their housing ect… like with me.

Don’t do it.
If you help out then the unions will prevail.
If you don’t help out then the jobs will go over seas faster and crumble the unions faster.

isn’t that backwards?

If they still get tires produced the unions will eventually go back to work.
If they can’t get tires they will have to look elsewhere.
They won’t come back after they start making tires for $.20/ hour.

Unless you’re worried about your safety, do it.

i work there and i wouldent build tires if u paid me 50 an hour, too boring standing at the same machine all damn day long.

Im not sure but the salaried folks are getting bussed in, so safety is not going to be an issue if thats what they do with the temps, if u gotta drive in, lol good luck.

carpetbagger

And if you have to drive in, you"ll definatly be putting those dent resistant panels to the test.

But just remember how much you hated working at that machine-shop. This would possibly be worse.

lol ive been there 5 years and i could never build tires, fuck that

the article didn’t specify what the job would be. If they are proposing me working at a machine all day like I did at novatech that will last all of 3 days. if i’m loading a truck or something physical it wouldent be as bad.

edit: what do you do there and who is on strike?

yeah they are taking all of the salaried folks now and having some build tires, and some working in the warehouse loading tires up.

it would be cool if u got a warehouse job

I work in IS, the union people are striking IE:hourly tire builders, the managers and salaried folks are still working there. 12 hour shifts, 1 day off per week
