ehh so somebody backed into my 89 camaros driver door at the ritz and i went for the estimate today and i think instead of having the door blended to match the oem color i might just have the whole car resprayed by earl sheib. its the same price as the blending and i wanted to paint my camaro anyway. sound like a good idea? i know you get what you pay for but im going to do the prep work myself just incase. ive seen one of theyre paint jobs and it wasnt all that bad…
i had my 300zx painted by one of those cheap-o paint places. trust me, prep it urself, and then pay them a little extra to prep it again. some spots they left paint on and there was like a ridge where it looked like it was gonna start to peel. other then that, just polish it nicely and it will look fine. not show worthy, but better then 17 yr old paint
How much to buy a decent (nothing fancy) gravity fed gun, filters, nozzles, and actual paint / primer?
Im sure he can find -or- rent a compressor… most Crapsmen compressors (30+ gal / 3+hp) could do it…?
Then, then You have to prep the living hell out of Your garage / work area. Youd basically have to build (1"x2"s & 3mil plastic sheeting made into a cube just bigger then You kaa) a spray booth in Your garage. Add a box fan to create a slight pressure / breeze. And whatever else that Im not thinking of.
Add the cost of all of that to Your sanding & prep work… me thinks it might be cheaper to go to Earls.
Someone work out a supply list with prices to compare to a Scheib Job. Ready? GO!
i have a gravity fed HYLP Mac tools gun and a compressor(which wont keep up with the gun) but no area or time to do it. i can paint a car, ive done like 8. i just dont want the hassle.
EDIT: i have hosed down drivways and surronding areas and used a car port as a booth but that still leaves me with the time and hassle factor. its insurance money so it really doesnt make sense for me to waste my time when somebody else can waste theirs. lol.
oh and should i take my whole system out before i take it there??? do you think they would jack my ish, or later on rob it? better be safe then sorry i guess.
yeah, now that i have to leave my car there overnight, im definately taking all of my shit out of it. the shop is in such a crappy part of buffalo. i saw earls work. its worth it for the money. as long as my shit doesnt get jacked.
gunmetal. i told him id tape it off and prep most of it and he was like “Why?”
“um because i dont want any overspray on my car”
“i guarentee you wont tape it better than we do. see the white bimmer out there? we did that”
" oh so you mean the one with the paint on the exhaust tips and over all the black moulding and rubber mouldings around the windows and on the tires?"
" he wanted it that way… he didnt want any black on the car. he wanted it to look like the new bimmers"
“:bloated:”
Just out of curiousity how much does he charge, the Taurus could definatly use a new paint job. I would spray it myself but I have no garage that I could use for it.
im not naming names cuz greg doesnt want anyone to know it was him. my paint is going to cost about 400-450. but hed shoot the toreass for like 220 if you do like black white red brown purple tan lime green. thers a few other off the wall colors fo that cheap too. next price up is 280 and then its in ten dollar intervals. oh and the paint actually does come out pretty nice. the guy that had the bimmer done prolly did want all the mouldings but prolly nt the exhaust and tire painted lol. the paint is guarenteed for 6 years too. so you really are getting a deal.
Earl did mine about 6 months ago - you get what you pay for, and I knew that going in. However, it was a better job than I was expecting. 6 months later, and I have some chipping, but I didn’t opt for the clear coat. I wouldn’t really worry about it as long as you are getting the same color again.
