Employment complications

I only have a few months to decide what I am going to do. I have been in the U.S. Air Force for almost 6 years. My seperation date is july 6th of this year. I am unsure whether I am going to stay in this area or move back to where I am from, Coatesville, Pennsylvania just west of Philadelphia.

I currently have a TS clearance since I do Presidential Security. I have been doing that job now for 5 years and the clearance is in the finalization of getting renewed since it is only good for 5 years. I have been a Staff Sergeant, E-5, for 2 years now. I am testing for Tech Sergeant, E-6, on February 24th. I will not know if I make it till 5 days prior to me seperating. If I make Tech Sergeant, I am definatly staying in the military. If I do not I am getting out.

If I get out I am unsure whether I will apply for jobs here or go back home. If I stay in this area, I have to make $57,000 a year to break even with what I make now. Also, if I stay here I am going to stay renting from my roommate. If I move back to Pennsylvania, the cost of living is cheaper. My parents offered me their BEAUTIFUL house for $120,000 since they owe nothing on it and just wanna move into a smaller house since only them two and 2 of my brothers are left there and one is in high school. It is getting to be too much yard work for my dad and too much cleaning in the house for my step-mom since both are getting up in age now. The house is a single family house with 5 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, computer room, 2 attics and 4 basement rooms sitting on 1.2 acres. I planned on renting to 2 friends and giving each 2 bedrooms for $350 per person and 1/3 utilities each.

Now if I move up there, I am going to work for the VA Hospital as a law enforcement officer and they start off at $41,000 a year there and I have experience so they said I would be slighly higher. Plus these guys give me FULL benefits just like the military did so I pay for no insurances either. Like I said, cost of living there is cheaper and for the price of the house, I don’t know if I can pass it up since they are selling within a year no matter what.

If I stay here, I have the clearance which helps and I am sure I can at least find a job for $50,000 a year here but now we have some things that pop up. I will be RENTING, possibly paying for my insurances and taxes will RAPE MY ASS!!!

I like both areas. The thing I like more about PA is, I know a lot more people and the commute to work is only 8 minutes from the house and my one possible roommate would work at the same spot. Plus, I will be close to my family again. In MD, I like the night life around here and how close everything is to whereever you are. Now in PA I am not from the sticks but it would be like just a small town somewhere in the Burbs of B-more or DC.

Just trying to find out what others think would possibly be best for me. If I go to the VA hospital, my military years go towards my retirement from them also. That would make me 48 when I retire.

I really would like to stay in this area but being able to buy that house for that price, I might be crazy to pass it up, especially since a brand new 6 person hot tub got installed

It is not that I miss back home since I am so close but I am trying to weigh out what the difference would be with taxes and benefits and stuff would be. Plus, if I buy a house, that helps with taxes. It is a pay cut for me but I am unsure about how much but the Trans Am will be paid off also about 6 months after I would move in the house in PA since I would use equity to pay it off. Also, I get a $5,000 signing bonus if I go to PA which would greatly help pay off a credit card after taxes are yanked out of it…god damn 28% tax getting taking out

What does everyone think? I know the decision is on me and no one else but wanna hear insight!

if u dont stic wiht the air force…then i say move home and get that house!!!

thats what a few people are telling me. I think that might be the better way but I am unsure and just thought I would get some more input from people. Maybe someone was in this predicament before and knows what might be better. I am up for any ideas

ooorrrr…go to texas wiht me!!! but if u dont get the E-6…then id say go home and get that house ya know!!! and get that job, with benifts, and close drive!!

How bout you just bring them Texas women on up here and we can build a ranch or something. I love the southern women. Always will be some room for Texas women in the house

I personally think that purchasing a house and subletting it is always a better option than renting. You gain nothing by renting, but if you can get a mortgage and sucker (not really sucker, but whatever) 1 or 2 people into renting the house, therefore paying part of your mortgage and part of your utilities, then you are way ahead of the game.

I say move hom, get that house, and make a couple of bucks off of it to keep your costs down for as long as possible. good luck either way.

How far is Limerick from Coatesville?

Good opportunity there with your security clearance…

Not exactly sure, I will check into it. Thanks for reminding me

Is there any benefit to sticking with the Air Force as far as years of service affecting the level of pension you receive? Pensions are almost non-existent in the commercial world anymore.

The house sounds badass. dont pass up the oppertunity to become a homeowner… will probably work out better. dont forget that houses appreciate. and if your parents are willing to give you a decent price on that house, i would go with it. what you think its acctually worth?? prob would be in the mid $200,000 range here in pgh

It is a low cost of living area and still got appraised at $287,000.

The reason I really don’t wanna stay in the military is the people that were there, the lack of opportunity to say “I quit”, if you didn’t like something and you thought there might be a better way you just gotta shut up and color, and the younger people have no respect for anything anymore. It is just not for me.

Well the house would be a good investment… if you end up getting it and not need the size, sell it, that would turn one hell of a profit for you…
