Here it is, my dilemma. What do those 3 bolts in the middle do? They obviously don’t go into the block.
I downloaded the R32 FSM but it didn’t seem to say much about the RB20. In my copy of the R33 FSM they have a RB20 section and go into pretty good detail about installing the head gasket. There is no mention of the three bolts near the sparkplugs for the RB20 or the RB25, I would leave those alone and just remove the other bolts (should be 14 head studs). If the head doesn’t come off then you have a problem. Download the R33 All Engine Manual and check out page EN-87.
Thanks. You are a wealth of knowledge.
Does your motor have those 3 bolts?
I want to say it doesn’t, but I would have to pull the cover off the coil packs to double check.
Check this out!
Removing RB Heads
OMFG thank you so much. That is EXACTLY what I needed. I missed the 3-10mm bolts. And those 3 bolts ups top are pointless as far as the HG is concerned.
However, I would like to know what TDC is that they keep referring to.
TDC - Top Dead Center. It’s when a piston is at the highest point in the cylinder, the crankshaft and connecting rod is fully extended. Usually people refer to cylinder 1 when talk about TDC also. Seriously read through your engine section in the FSM, there is also a glossary section that will explain all the acronyms.
Well, I took the cams out. Which is good apparently, because there is less chance of bending a rod. My understanding is to line the pistons all up in the middle of their cylinders THEN install the cams, and THEN go to TDC.
Will that FSM tell me how to time the engine and what way to put the cams?
Yes. Seriously, spend like a 1/2 hour and read the RB20 section and learn about everything involved with removing the head.
The fastest 240 i’ve been in was a rb30 with 3076r…Dam this was a beast it put down like over 490 flbs and like 530 hp …if i was gonna battle the 20. motors sr vs rb i would go sr just cause finding parts would be away easier !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vfOdaG7JCY <-----car white s13 with all the smoke is the rb red car is owned buy owne of built performance aka old heavy throttle
on the crank pulley theres a notch match that up with the timing cover where it says tdc if the marks arnt theyre take a long skinny screw driver gently place it threw the number one spark plug hole{ this is the cylinder closest to the timing belt } let the screw driver rest on the piston and rotate the engine with a ratchet untill the screw driver comes all the way up to the top thats another way to find top dead center
nico forums bro it is the safest place around…surk until your blue cause only steve, jeff, and a couple other boys that aren’t one this forum know anything about nissans around hear.
theres alot more people on this forum that know alot about nissan then you think the most knowledgeable nissan guy i know is SDP and I am sorry paul for throwing youre name out there but you have built some great stuff in the past and continue to into the future
Easy boys.
I been lazy ya’ll. It’s been raining a lot, and I don’t have $$ to get the head planed. But before I put it all back together I need a driver’s side motor mount and a coil pack for cylinder#4. I can’t find coil packs individually except through Nissa (yeah right) and I know Steve said he thought he had mounts but couldn’t find them.
HELP! I want to drive this before it’s cold out!!
I’m sure you can get what you need off NICO. RB20 coils go pretty cheap on there too.
Here’s what I came up with:
http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=341656
$20 a coil is pretty cheap.
edit- Actually mounts are kinda hard to find. Unless RB26 mounts fit, I saw a pair of them for $100.
and i want to meet him. if i havent? i dont remember.
GL on the gasket!
Thanks…yuck
It’s been so long since I took everything apart that I am not sure if I remember where it all goes!! lol :runaway
Thanks for the link man. I finally registered and pm’d the guy.
Actually, it won’t let me post in that post. WTF. And is there really no option to PM someone?
You can’t PM on NICO, and it seemed like I could post…
Anyway, his email is in his profile:

CCCCHHHHYYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
You can kinda see where the old one Failed
Now I gotta get the manifolds off and the head planed.
I pray that block is stAraight…if not you are creating the problem over agian. I did this when my 240 had a bad head on the DOHC enigine I use to have. Try to measure it
