Exhausts...

so if i just get one custom made then i just buy the muffler brand that i want and slap it on my custom piping?, btw i prob wont go bigger then 2.5" piping because i dont want overkill and a rice cannon. as for the megan racing exhaust ive only heard bad things about ppls experiences with cracks and leaks and all sorts of good stuff, im so stuck on which one to get all i get. put it this way i wont spend more then 400 in total, so if i can get a good catback for that im happy, i know a muffler runs about 175 or so, but i dont want just sound, and if there junk i dont want it. i dont want to cheap out, but im not going to spend 600 for a stromung exhaust. you say speedy muffler does custom exhaust? ill stop buy and get a quote then. can i just buy a apexi N1 muffler with that? will that be good? or do i just get a muffler from speedy muffler?

you can bring whatever you want to the exhust shop and they will slap it on. if you want a in-line muffler you can get good ones for around $100-$150. if you want a fancy shiny one that is a muffler and tip, like a racing style canister, they go for $180-$300.
After doing a few different setups on a few different cars I would recomend going with 2.5" at the largest piping, and one or two inline mufflers with just a tip at the end. it’s cheaper, and it won’t buzz from the glass pack and sound all ricey! make it clear to the muffler shop that you want it to sound deep and not too loud, and not that stupid “ricer” sound. they have years of experience on different cars, they can probably offer some advice to help you get the sound you need.
If you have any sharp corners get them to use mandrel bends, but if you just have gradual bends, on a NA engine, I don’t think it’s worth the extra money. might make a difference of like 2HP or something silly like that, not worth it for a couple extra hundred!

just called Alta Custom Exhaust and im going to stop by tom mornin, there in the southside, i dont know if there good or not, but he said exactially what you said Silvia, he said just come by we can do w/e u want so yah. thanks for the advice, i dont know whats a good custom shop any reccomendations? im new to custom stuff for my car so yah.

I have heard good things about some shop called something like A&B muffler and hitch, or something like that. But I don’t live in edmonton so I don’t really know who’s good.

Most of the Megan stuff I’ve seen is pretty brutal IMO. I would save some more money and go Greddy.

i think you’re talking about ABC… they do really good work, but aren’t the cheapest.

well i got some prices for my custom catback exhaust, they all were about 500 with a magnaflow muffler(which i dont want). i can get an apexi ws2 exhaust for 300 used, and just try and install it myself. prob going to go that way.

Try Sherwood Park Muffler in Sher. Pk. Drop Ragermans (Ryan) name there to one of the guys and maybe he can get you a deal, pm ragerman and he’ll let you know what to do. Park muffler is really good. Personally I would pm pyrexxx and force him to self his exhaust to you.

thank bud, ill give them a call.

Save up and buy the Apex’i N1 for sure.

you wont be dissapointed

wont it be too loud with a header and CAI, i dont want it to be toooo loud, so i was thinking apex WS2, i can get one for about 400 used 475 new, and i can get a apexi N1 for like 550 new. is it really worth it? just souind difference and muffler tip size isnt it?

i tried to hear some sound clips on thevboard but i cant get them for the apexi n1, does anyone have a sound clip of there apexi n1 exhaust?

the problem is that the diameter of piping makes a HUGE difference in the tone, and volume of your exhuast. as well as what you have for an inline muffler/resonator, and if you have a CAT, headers, intake, all make a BIG difference in the volume and sound of the exhuast. so listening to someone elses setup won’t really work too well if you have one or two different components the they do. it’s really hard to get the right combo, you just got to try some different things. trial and error really.

well i figure that the apexi ws2 is quiet as it is, but once i add cai and a header, and i was thinking of cutting out the cat in the midpipe and getting a shop to weld me some pipe in its place it will make my car gain some more hp and a shit load louder, do you recomend that? i know its against the law but who really checks! what should i do about that? even if i get a high flow cat its still not the same, so yah i figure with all those air mods it will make the exhaust louder as it is and it will still be tollerable, not a firecracker, as im sure the apexi n1 would sound like with all that. but back to the cat should i do that or what?

well, on my last 2 cars I took out the cat. it made the exhuast a little louder and helps with power, more noticable on a turbo of course. I don’t know what the law is against that in alberta, but either way, chances are soon someone will be cracking down on it. If you have the money I would get a high flow cat, or have them install the exhuast in such a way that you could come back and install one later, as close to the headers as possible. and obviously your gonna do the intake and headers, you allready made up your mind about that, but it will of course increase overall volume levels. the only way to fight that is with smaller piping and more restrictive mufflers.
my last car was a integra GSR and I did the exhuast from the header back with just a racing style muffler at the back. well that was way to loud so I came back and he installed a inline straight through resonator, then it sounded like a can of bees. so then I had him put in a single baffle resonator(meaning not straight through, all exhuast has to pass through some glass pack) and then it sounded great! nice and quite at cruising speeds, but when you floored it you could really hear the air getting sucked in, and a great little growl at the rear…I loved it! and best of all, I noticed some more torque in the lower RPM’s. I am sure i lost some high end power, but I didn’t spend too much time at 8,000RPM’s! and the low end torque was GREAT!
long story short…I don’t know what your engine likes and doesn’t like, I don’t know what it drives like or sounds like. I don’t know what you want it to feel like and sound like. but the piping diameter plays a big part in noise, and so does the style of muffler/resonator used, along with the level of restriction. A little restriction will probably cost you all of a couple HP but gain you better daily driveability, in my mind it’s worth it, but you have to decide what you want!

no torque …but more top end …

I like the new exhausts that Trust and Greddy are making but will always go back to HKS for look and sound

yah, well im pretty sure that you need atleast 1 cat for emissions. but im going to get 2.25-2.5 inch piping and an apexi WS2 muffler if i go custom, if not then ill just buy the apexi ws2 catback kit. if it gets too loud i can always like you said put a resonater in and that will help, but i just want a nice deep tone when it idles and not toooo loud when driving on the highway. so prob the ws2 is the best as it will get louder with the header and cai, also since i can gain some hp ill prob cut out the cat and have them just weld in a straight pipe. if i ever get in shit, i can always go back and have them weld my cat back into the exhaust or just buy a high flow cat and have that installed.

hey thats a great question.

I use an RSR muffle rwith 3" custom pipes. I have kept the scilencer in it and its sounds nice. i had the kakimoto cat back before and it was awsome.

my old skyline had the HKS hyper madalon and it was ok Too.

to be honest the sounds are very different on everycar. i dont like a load car and i have been happy with all 3 manufactures.

the kakimoto did get blown up on a downshift when i was running Very rich!

i know the sounds are different on every car and depending on the mods, but im thinking of getting rid of the car, as for now my plans are Apexi WS2 exhaust w/ SSA header, and AEM CAI. anyone think its worth getting rid of the cat on my exhaust? do you gain noticable hp for how much it would cost to get a pipe welded in its place?

Go Fujitsubo  or they probably don’t make them for usdm Sentras.
