For you camaro/trans am owners, what kinda mileage do you get outta a set of tires?? what type of tire is it/ treadwear rating?
Im lucky if I can get a summer out of anything I put on any of the fbodies I owned :boink
fat chicks throwing the alignment out???
I used to run Kuhmo Victoracers on my L98 Camaro and LS1 Camaros. However, I didn’t run them on the street. I drove to the events on my street tires and changed tires/wheels when I got to the event. Since they were used at track days and autocross it’s hard to compare wear without comparing driving style.
A few years back, I also ran Yokohama AVS Intermediates on my LS1 Camaro. These were mostly for steet and autocross. I bought 8 of them off of Tire Rack when they were discontinued and got +2 years out of the 8. I believe one of the Yokohmam ADVAN models replaced the Intermediates but the ADVANs are stupid-expensive, IMO.
The only r-compound tires (race tires) that I would run on the street would be the Toyo Proxies RA-1’s. With a full season of road racing and a little autocrossing thrown in, they last almost the whole season - and I order these shaved. If you’re looking for an excellent gripping tire that wears decent, I recommend these. When my tires die on my daily driver, I am probably going to get these (without shaving them) for the car for summer driving and buy a second set of wheels and have winter tires for the snowy months.
I got about 13K out of the original Goodyear Eagle RSA, and about 13-15K out of a set of BF Goodrich Comp TAs and 2 sets of Firestone Firehawk SZ50s. All were 245/50R16 and Z rated.
The Firehawks had the best traction and wear evenness. Got a 1.887 60’ on the Firehawks.
Well, i’m just not gettin great wear outta my tires… My car isn’t stock, but its not like it has 700 hp… and i don’t smoke the tires off hardly ever, b/c i can’t afford to be replacing tires all the time… but it seems like i get about 12K outta my tires, no matter what brand i get… i’m not worried about grip, i’m worried about getting long life… i just wanna know if something is wrong with my car… I never figured anythign was wrong with the alignment, b/c the tires wear evenly on the sides, just quicker in the middle (much quicker)… for example, i have Falken ZE512’s right now… they are a 360 treadwear and i had them all summer and most of the fall at 28lbs, but the last two months they’ve been at 24 lbs (dangerously low)… and no matter how low i go in tire pressure, they are still wearing in the middle well faster than the sides… I think i probably have about 10 to 11K on them now, and i’m to the wear bars in the middle, however not really even close on the sides… what do you think i should do? is there a problem?
Corner faster to wear the sides more?
That’s close to the wear I get with a few burnouts at the track and some frequent hard cornering on the street. Remember that treadwear numbers can only be compared within a tire company. And supposedly that can be a number for the “family” of tires not a specific model (e.g., there can be different Eagle RSA compounds).
Have you tried other brands and gotten the same type of wear?
WHen you say they are wearing in the middle regardless of tire pressure, are you referring to the fronts or the rears? If they are the fronts, what is your toe set to? Excessive toe-out can cause more-than-expected wear in the middle of the tire.
I’d would be pleased as can be with 12k out of a set of performance tires on the street.
360 treadwear are rocks. They should last forever.
it doesnt seem to matter what tires i use… i got a set of cheapo 500 treadwear tires, but i forgot to write down how long they asted… last set before these, i had a set of Potenza’s that were 400 i believe… they had about 80% tread left when i got them and they lasted 15K miles or so until they were completely bald… they wore slightly faster on the outside, but not near as bad as these Falkens…
Keith, my fronts and rears are wearing at the same rate actually… i’ve rotated tires once, but didnt need to, i just did it b/c i was tearing into somethign else and figured “why not”… but they were pretty much worn the same at that point, and even right now, the rears are JUST SLIGHTLY more worn that the fronts… not enough to make much of a difference… BOTH front and rear wear in the middle quick and the outsides still have lots of tread…
i’m just not sure what to think…
They’re not exaclty performance tires, but more so than others i’ve had int he past…
they are Falken ZIEX ZE512 … cheap tires… maybe that has to do with it… but i dunno… i’m gonna have to get new ones, and what i’m contemplating is getting a 255/50zr16… figured a wider tire would sit on the edge a little more and then i’d get a moe even wear… but i dunno… fyi, stock is 245/50/16
on tiresavings.com a 255/50 is 69 per tire for those Falkens… freakin cheap as hell…
just not sure what to do, and i need some advice and some others to compare with…
i cant even get 12k miles out of the falken 512 or any other tire on my vw. you should be more than happy.
of course
really?
the way i started thinkin about it this afternoon was, i’m gettin the most miles per dollar… those tires Jeff said about are good, soft tires, and i didnt understand how such a soft tire would last as long as my Falken’s… but they are also in the 100’s per tire… i’m lookin at $70 per tire
i guess i just never thought i’d get such low miles outta a set…
that still doesnt explain the awkward wear tho
Just to put your mind at ease regarding your alignment, you might want to get the car on a rack and pay particular attention to front toe and rear thrust angle (since it’s a live axle car). Usually when you buy new tires, you can get an alignment fairly inexpensively and sometimes free when the NTB’s, etc. are running a special… Otherwise, you can expect to pay $60-$70 for an alignment at a place like NTB. Believe it or not, I get my best alignment service out of NTB in McMurray, even on the race car.
But what if all their tires are rocks and rated at 360 and you get 10,000 miles out of them. That would be their baseline rating. Then if they came out with a 400 treadwear then you would get 11,111 miles out of them.
100 miles out the rears
15,000 out of the fronts
dont have a car long enuff to know!

How is the dry traction with the Kumhos? You have any 60’ times for them?
