Okay so i’m bench racing a bit since my car is away for the winter… but there are only mild things that need to be done to her and i have plenty of tires for the early part of the season to getting back into things and shaking out any remaining bugs…
What i am most concerned about right now is tires…
i do not want to roll on R-comps all year because i do street and high-way the car when i’m bored or to scare the shit outta colleagues… so what is the best tire?
Problem is, Star-spec doesnt come wider than 255 wide, and the Falken doesnt offer the 245 in a 40 series… i’d go Yoko or even Hankook but i cant find anything with a 200 or lower treadwear that offers both of these sizes.
the rt-215’s were the first time i bought a new tire for grip… it blew my mind even with a shit alignment. I have the RT-615’s up front and never had an issue up front this year even being only a 225…
They’re cheap enough where i dont care if they dont last a whole year and stickier than anything else near the pricepoint that i’ve tried.
I liked the Kumho MX, they’re about done now… but they didnt have the same level of grip… notably less. I would use them again on a hard DD car, but never on the track again. I actually use them on the rear for Drift now…lol
FM-901’s were okay… not as sticky as the Falkens… Firestones fucking suck… The F1’s delaminated on the outside.
how where the kumho mx’s, i can get em at my work just wondering if their any good? you can get both of those sizes, theres also pirelli, but those are pretty expensive, i put a set of used p zero rosso’s in the back and they grip amazingly.
i dont need to be sold on them, i’ll try them next year for sure.
i have a pair of FK452’s in 275/40… i don’t think they’ll grip hard enough but i may start the year with them on account of size unless someone makes a good offer on them.
Hahahah I just read your whole post and saw that you mentioned the Z1s already.
Another tire that I have also tried are the Hankook RS-2s.
They are rated slightly lower than the Falken RT-615s but an overall better tire since wet traction is superior.
I’d say these tires are like the little brother of the Z1s because they both have similar characterisitcs in terms of good dry AND wet traction.
RS-2s seem to last longer then the Z1s though, and the sidewall is slightly softer on the RS-2s.
I liked the RS-2 and was good for my application last year. Too bad they are on the same price level as the Z1s.
PS: The Z1s run slightly wider then other tires so a 255 might end up being a 265. Another reason why I like the Z1s is because they heat up INCREDIBLY fast. No need to do a few laps to get these puppies hot. In the cold I’d maybe drive 500M or less and turn onto the major intersection and spin these slightly in 2nd gear and the next thing I know is that these are ready to go. These are by far the fastest heating up tires that I have tried.
seems everyone is stuck on china tires, no one ever run Michelin or BF Goodrich tires? Pilot sport or g-forces? i have G-Forces on my iroc and they are very good grippy tires. Most people cant afford them tho thats going to be the problem with this demograph.
Personally i’ve just been another poor student who drives on what he can find.
But this summer i worked my ass off and made a huge effort to find good tires.
Dunlop FM901s were pretty good but the ones i had were dry-ish and old so i dont think i got the best performance out of them. Heard they were scary in the rain though.
Potenza S-02 i drove on these on the street a couple times never had them on a track. Felt pretty serious.
Falken FK452s I’m actually rolling on these and i have to say they’re pretty good. Amazing in the rain and overall one of the best street tires i’ve rolled around in.
Potenza RE01s I rolled around my last month with these on the s13, and i have to say they are amazing, the BEST tires i have ever driven on since i had them in the rain and dry. I’ve never chirped them or broken them loose. They over power my brakes. Under heavy braking the rears break loose before the front. AMAZING
