The “blah blah blah” wasn’t a shot, I agreed with everything you said. I just needed filler for your long ass post. <3

Keep it classy. What might seem like an “old man” tie, is probably stylish as fuck. Anything you see tie wise @ Express, RUN. Fucking bright colors that contrast and thick stripes are horrid, not to mention the quality of silk is dog shit.
I’ve had good luck finding decent ties in the clearance sections at dept stores. I’ve gotten some really nice patterns for $10. They don’t last forever, so you might find yourself buying new ones every bunch of months, but then again you don’t want to be rotating between the same ties every week. That’s boring.
Agreed on the tailoring points, I take all my stuff to Maurice on Main in University Heights. He can turn stuff around next day if need be, otherwise it’s usually a week.
I started having him tailor some shirts for me, I don’t know why I didn’t do that years ago.
Not to highjack the thread but any suggestions on shoes to wear with dress pants? I’ve done the sketchers shoes, and my Cole Haan slip on shoes. I’d like something a bit nicer, but also inexpensive. I’m a computer tech that deals with everybody from students to VPs.
as with shirts and suits you want your shoes to have a narrow profile and to fit well. They should also match your belt and be well kept. Keep a horse hair brush around. Instead of using polish use shoe cream. It’s better for the leather in that it moisturizes rather than dries the leather. shoes do not have to be shiny, they just need to be clean… always spend a few moments on them with the brush etc. when you walk in salt / slush.
you can tell the amateurs when they’re wearing old, big, boxy, worn out black shoes from aldo or some other random mall store. same as i suggested above with suits, learn your size and spec then try buying off ebay. I have scooped 4 pairs of allen edmonds for $15 - $75 off ebay in the last year and wear them everyday.
they key with the pant / shoe is to get the right hem. Since i’m wearing funky socks i hem a bit higher than most people would like but i think it looks silly when your pants bunch up at the bottom. It throws off the whole lower pant leg and gets dirtier as a result since there is excess material.
RE: Pant / Shoe hem length… i saved this pic off SF. Had my last suit and pair of unfinished pants hemmed to about here. No cuff though, i’m not quite gangster enough for that.
I go for the cuff whenever I can. I think it just looks so much better IMO.
Im going to start shopping for a nice pair if allen edmunds on ebay. Bing, if you see a deal that your not going to scoop up, pass it my way. I have a fantastic cobbler that will bring any shoe back to life.
whats good about AE is that they offer a full recrafting ::: HERE
A lot of the SF crew hates on AE pretty steady as a ‘cheap’ shoe… i guess relatively speaking they’re nothing compared to $900 - $2,500 Vass’s or John Lobb’s.
it’ll be a long while before i’d even consider something like that. I did come across a black Church’s brogue but there was only one… the other was a Cole Haan that looked similar that the vintage shop had mistaken for the Church’s. would have been nice to get a pair of churchs ($800 - $1,200 shoes) for $40… i picked up a camel Yves St Laurent sport coat there instead
I am always looking for used AE’s since they do the recrafting. Thrift stores are gold mines for nice used shoes that can be rebuilt and last for years. Some people think it’s gross, but an old shoe can be brought back to life for a little bit of money.
I was checking out the AE’s on ebay. It seems that people are selling them after they have been rebuilt. Must be some good money if you have can find a reasonable cobbler that allows you to make a little profit.
