Can someone explain to me how a 130hp corolla can not only tow 1500lbs but out tow other cars with 2x the hp and 2x the tq???

My Elantra was rated to tow 3500 pounds. I dont know how that was possible and I wasnt about to try it.
All I ever towed with it was a 4x8 trailer with a 440 pound quad on it.

No way that is right, got any official specs? What year is your Elantra?

It was an '05 and I got the info off Edmunds.com when I owned the car.

ok, I found it. 3k with trailer brakes, without is 1k.

Upon research, unassisted brake towing is around 1850 max.

I knew it was something ridiculous.

I mentioned the trailer brakes in my first attempt at posting but my computer fucked up and the post didnt submit and I forget to include it in my second attempt (the one that worked)

Gotcha. Still that is some crazy shit, not sure if I ever want to try it even with trailer brakes…:lol

Really I didnt like pulling the quad on the trailer with it very much and decided to upgrade to a truck.
It pulled the quad fine though.

Keep it out of OD an it will tow it just fine. Anyone behind you will hate you tho. There are a lot of other factors in towing. Some of the cars with x2 HP wil beat the snot out of the trans pulling the weight. Engine will be fine but driveline may be F’ed. Either way I would suggest a trans cooler if the vehicle is auto. The TC clutch wont handle the extra load and even if it does it will be cycling in and out due to the low power engine. Tow Haul Mode on pickup trucks disable the TC clutch for this reason and vehicle not equiped with this feature usually recommend towing in “3” instead of “D”.

If you think about it… its not that hard. Have any of you ever used a pallet jack? I’ve personally “towed” many 1 ton pallets around with a pallet jack.

Or also think if you had the car fully loaded… lets say the average person is 200lbs. 5 people would be 1000 pounds in the car… I know its not the same as towing but still, I can definitely believe it can tow that.
