FRANKENSTORM 2012

Water is already over the docks and in the streets out on Long Island. The storms hasn’t really even arrived and they have 4 more high tides to endure during the course of this storm. Not good.

My mom is posting pics to facebook, I’ll cross post some good ones if the flooding is bad.

Well considering that my dealership is overstocked, it wont be too hard. I have 1000, 2100, and 3100 models all portable in stock ready for sale, but I would rather buy a construction gen and have it overnighted.

So this is just going to be storm weather now? No snow?

Last I saw, it was just snow in the higher elevations.

It’s snowing in the NC mountains right now… Elevations out that way are pretty high though.

why not just take out an RV from your stock for a couple days lol

Good point!

I wish! My dealership isn’t that generous. I am just hoping that it’s cold enough outside that I can just take the meat and throw it in a cooler outside, but I doubt that will happen. I am debating on buying a 2100 watt portable for $500 +/- or just buying a 5/6k watt construction gen. but then I run the risk of it not showing up from shipping.

got back from denver last night. work rerouted me from charlotte to ohare, which i was meh about, but it worked. no delays and got home 5 hours earlier

The cloud cover was nuts

WNY will not see any snow.

Portions of WV are under a blizzard warning though and will see up to 2 feet of snow. Mother nature… you so crazy!

I have 30 of a Generac 5736-0 which is a 5.5Kw construction grade generator. They are all in Hartford CT, and I am pretty sure I could have it shipped in but not sure about overnight. The cost is $607.20 + tax.

reports of schools already saying they will be closed. WTF is wrong with this area. Sure the weather may be shitty soon, but its not right now. Why are schools prejudging the storm in this area and it hasnt even begun to do anything here. I remember finding out the day of, that school was cancelled because of a storm. Why is this not the case anymore. Seems this is becoming a trend. Last time schools closed early before a storm, we got about 2" of snow and the school districts looked stupid for it.

Welp… got our first support call from someone who bought a disaster recovery laptop from us a couple years ago and then did nothing to keep it up to date until the hurricane was pretty much blowing in her front door (she’s in Maryland).

Funny how many businesses wait until the disaster is knocking down a wall before they think about disaster planning.

dammit, I feel like I need to at least figure out how to power my sump pump in the event of a power outage…

It’s a really serious storm man. Worse than Irene, and Irene fucked shit up all the way into Vermont/NH. The coastline is not the only area at serious risk. When the New York Stock Exchange shuts down and ALL NYC mass transit, then you know some shit is about to go down.

It’s not worth risking for one day of school. Playing it safe isn’t a bad thing.

Just an FYI… Most sump pumps will NOT run off one of those DC to AC invertors that you can plug into your car. The initial surge when they kick on will just trip the breaker in the inverter. What you can get to run off one though is a small pump most of the local pool stores carry for pumping the water off an inground pool’s pool cover.

I rigged this setup up for a neighbor using my pump during the Oct storm and he kept his basement completely dry. He had to go out and start his car every hour or so and let it idle for a while to keep the battery from dying but it was a whole lot easier than the bucket brigade he was attempting. Once things were settled a bit we rigged up a $10 float switch so the pump would even come on automatically.

^^^could always set up a gravity style sump pump as a back up. neat stuff but not a complete replacement for a regular electric sump pump.

just saw an email at work, our baltimore, boston, DC, and NYC offices are closed today. lol.

news report says 16-22ft waves on lake ontario from niagara river to hamlin beach. im thinking about taking a drive out there tonight to check it out.

I guess, but Buffalo is a pretty good distance away from the coast to which all winds will slow. (we’ve all had to deal with 50-60mph gusts) and well its rain…I mean thats the only major threat probably to our area. The wind we get time to time and manage just fine. A few siding pieces fall off, couple downed trees. I’m sure some people will lose power. I just think its being way to hyped about here in Buffalo. NYC and some of the closer areas, definitely a big thing.

Since schools rely heavily on computers now, any school that loses power is pretty much worthless. I already have a meeting in an hour to go over power loss procedures.

We don’t get 50-60 MPH gusts from the north though, which makes a big difference since all the trees in WNY have developed their root systems for our prevailing south winds.

If we get the wind, in this saturated ground, I expect to see pretty widespread power outages in WNY. Is it full panic time? Definitely not. But I understand taking precautions.
