I actually do go out/drink on Fri/Sat nights. Except it’s in a different city every weekend and with a great bunch of guys I spent all day racing with. It’s slightly less mundane and routine that way.

That puts me at about 65-70 mph on a 45 second course…you must have a shitty honda that cant get out of it’s on way if you can’t get over 20 mph…and thats sad…very very sad…ditch said shitbox, get a turbocharged vw or bmw so that you can actually go fast. BTW all above people are right, half of us are track instructors…we get paid to teach people like you to drive…scary isn’t it? When I had my VR4 I autox’d once last year on top of prospect and it was a really good time. More fun than I have ever had at the strip. Granted the VR4 had massive amounts of understeer and weight, I did pretty good according to the guys there. I plan on going again this year. And someday maybe i’ll join and make a hobby out of it.

I don’t know why people get worked up about this shit. On sunday I had nothing planned so I went to the autocross 15 minutes from my apartment and got some seat time in a car that is completely different than my honda. Monday night I got bored and ended up driving out into the sticks to find some twisty back roads… I had no idea where I was or where I was going, but it was a damn good time.
I just like driving.
Some of you guys seem to prefer to sit and talk about driving. I’ll only do that at times that I can’t be driving
It’s because everyone cares what the next guy is doing, and needs to let them know if they approve of it or not.
To be nationally competitive? Yeah definitely, car setup is infinite and different techniques affect the outcome…there are no danger variables, no other car to get in your way, etc etc, so yeah it is way more vague, the course is ALWAYS different, the apex’s arent the same for every car…i can go on and on here…It is way more difficult to be a pro aut-xer than it is to be a pro-driver. The car needs completely different shock valving and spring rates than if you were road racing. That is an art in itself…when tire rack compares and test tires what do you think they do? They set-up an auto-x and skid pad and test tires. Why? Because you abuse the tire harder than if you were on track…If anyone here thinks it’s easy to be pro at it…than come to national tour with us, bring your car and get your ass handed to you on a silver platter by the guys driving there street tired touring cars, while you are on your race rubber…

Actually it got demolished a few times by now. Leader is a karting champ, currently moonlighting in F2K and Star Mazda.
I dunno, the HPDE events look like crazy fun, but I know that’s not Auto X.
I am going to try one this year.

rally racing is an example standing out in my mind right now. same kind of things you were talking about, with 10x more variables to worry about.
I will not argue the fact that rally IS the most dangerous and difficult form of racing…if your going fast that is.
I was just saying to be nationally competitive at auto-x is very, very difficult…to say the least. The driver is almost always also the mechanic, crew and car set-up guy…
So it only took a year and a half for a mercedes tech’s times to get beat…by a paid pro…sorry…my bad. Hahahaha
