Fun DD options?

I started searching for a fun DD been driving the Jeep for way to long.

Couple requirements

Keeping it under 30k however cheaper is better so I have more cash to build a siqqq F-body or drag car.
RWD/AWD doesn’t matter I work from home and will have a 2nd available

Options currently kicking around

CPO 335i(2009-2010)
G37x - (2010-2011)
WRX or STI
Evo

The two I don’t know much about are the Evo/WRX platforms things like reliability

I’m not going to go crazy modding it maybe a few bolt ons

Any other useful suggestions?

e46 ///m had for under 20k spend the other 10+ on a VF SC kit. Will be tons of fun and really reliable. the 335i as soon as the CPO is up won’t be fun anymore.

Wrx/Sti’s are only good for blowing up. Some of them don’t which is nice, but I know plenty of people with bad ring lands <10k miles. I went through two motors and sold mine.

The Evo, not sure on reliability.

The 335i would be fun, jb4 and you are good to go. (On a side note, I am selling my 09 135i with 26k miles if interested)

Or

The reason I am selling my 135 is to get an e55 which is just a beast of a car.

Don’t get the infiniti. I would rather have the subaru’s

One last edit. Here is a good reason to get an e55… CLICK!

25k for the car. $2,500 for a Stg 1 package and you have ~557hp/616lb ft and heated seats. I’m in.

That was my general understanding about WRX/STi and motor issues so :tif:

Maybe some Evo people will jump in seems like the 2009-2010 are in the 20s?

AMG is cool I worry about maintenance or issues on a car like that however

From that list, the 335i is, by far, the best for a DD in my opinion. The balance between performance/luxury/cost in those cars is in a league of it’s own.

I have a c63. So far 0 issues other than some small exhaust leaks and a bent wheel which was an ADV wheel and not OEM. Long story short, car came from out of state with secondary cats taken out and the dealership wouldn’t “deliver” the car to me until the cats were back in. So 1 hack job later it had cats and spots to leak from. I just have to get a real shop with a good fabricator to weld up a good exhaust piece for me and I’ll be good to go.

Plus, I have a warranty that is good for a while just in case with the M156 motor. However, the motor in the e55 is actually really good and if you do a search you’ll see some up in the 180k mile range running strong. The biggest PITA I would say is that it takes like 9 quarts of oil or something ridiculous like that plus you usually have to mitivac it up rather than drain oil. Little things here and there but overall it really isn’t all that bad.

I agree here. There is the battle of the n54 vs n55 motors but really you can’t go too wrong with either. I have an n54 and that is my preference but some live and die by that n55. However, as far as the current list is concerned the 335 is the stand out car and if you get the x drive you’d have an awesome winter car.

I do think that the OP was looking for options/opinions towards other cars though which is why I chimed in with that e55. Youtube it, listen to it, love it.

I’m interested in seeing if any EvoX guys jump in here with reliability talk. But coming from the Subaru world I can say that the 08+ models are risky.

While I don’t DD my car through winter I would say the reliability for a X is pretty good. You don’t really need to do bolt ons to get the most power out of the car for the stock turbo. A boost controller a tune and a test pipe will get you close to the same power I make. 2008 evos are dipping down to the low 20’s. As far as stuff going wrong all I’ve seen is ACD/AYC pump failure which isn’t covered under the power train warranty for some reason. Pumps can be rebuilt though and it sits right in the rear bumper so it isn’t super hard to get to to change it. You could probably find a 400+ hp one for mid to high 20’s if you’re trying to go that route. A full weight X with my 330 awhp runs low 12’s so it’s enough to have fun with. Maintenance isn’t bad either for these cars. Driveline fluid changes at 15-30k depending how you drive them and it’s less than $100 if you do it yourself.

If you aren’t super concerned with performance I vote s4. By far the best daily driver I’ve owned.

My second choice would be an e46 m3.

Fun and performance go together

Come drive my 1 series. Just make sure you bring cash because you wont want to leave without it

LZ, I’ve had four of the cars being talked about in this thread and two that you originally listed. I currently dd a 2011 135i. It’s awesome, but I can’t chime in on reliability yet as its only been 3 weeks. I’m into it under $30k with warranty to 70k. Before the 135 was a 2006 sti. It was cool, but not as awesome as the 135i and realiability was so so. Before the sti came an e46 M3. We are back to awesome with this car and pretty damn good reliabilty and dd comfort. Last but not least before the M3 came a W211 E55. This was the awesomest of the bunch for a dd, but the most expensive to maintain so it was kept the shortest amount of time. So, my conclusion to date is 135i=M3>E55>STI. Hope that helps and good luck!

How about an LSA '09 CTS V

I just looked on cars.com at CTS-V’s… $18,977 for an accident free 06’ with 43k miles? What gives?

is 2009 the first year of being supercharged?

When I looked before all 2010+ were still 30k+

under 30,000 would be hard but a b8 s4 is about as good as it gets for an all around car

if you want comfort stay away from evo/sti

if you dont mind rattles etc an evo IX would be my pick, thats the one car that i regret selling

I like the CPO BMW because BMW does 0.9% + warranty

Yea I couldn’t find any under 30k one of my coworkers has one and loves it.

I guess I could put more down and go that route at the same time spending more opens up fun things like the new CTS-V

Main reason for posting was trying to figure out if I was missing anything obvious and fun in that range.

I can’t see you driving an evo or a wrx/sti Lol. Although they suck for modding, i would pick a 2011+ Limited WRX. Should have heated leather seats etc and the sti widebody.

i like my car, and i would probably pick an evo 9 as a dd if i could but there are much better options in the 20-30k range, especially more comfortable options. idk how X’s are, I’ve never driven one but i personally don’t like how they look.

So what you’re saying is I should DD an Evo and build a turbo EG hatch and really mind fuck everyone

that’s been there, done that by Shrek

DD your evo and build a neon as neonglh used to

i think i would be too tempted to mod an evo if i had it as a dd. they make good power and are reliable. the only reason i would pick a subaru is because i know its going to blow up past 320hp so it’ll put a limit on my mods

That’s bullshit with the Evo X not being a comfortable car. The recaros in the X are by far some of the most comfortable and supportive seats I’ve ever been in, but the interior does rattle. If you are looking at a X seriously get all the nicer options. Aero kit, navi, sight and sound and leather and sunroof. I’d let you drive mine but it’s apart…
