Garage Floor Issue

I moved into my first house in July, and had to do some maintenance things to the GTI last weekend. I jacked up the car, put it on jack stands and everything seemed fine. I never really noticed that my garage floor isn’t concrete until my jack stands started to sink into the ground. My entire garage floor is blacktop, or at least something very similar to blacktop :fail:

I know the short term fix is to just put a piece of wood under the stands but I don’t want to deal with that forever. I probably won’t worry about it until the spring but what are my options? How big of a project/how much would it cost to rip it all out and put down concrete? Is there some sort of rubber tile or something I can put down over the whole floor that I can jack a car up on? It’s a 2.0 car garage that’s a few feet deeper than normal.

Thanks.

epoxy it?

Lay plywood over the whole thing…

I would drill a hole and find out if its blacktop over concrete…seems very unlikely that it would be all blacktop. how old is the house?

I thought about this, but would it crack with a soft layer underneath.

Good idea, I’ll take a look this weekend. The house is from 1941 but I’m not sure if the garage has been there that long.

I had this issue at my first house, half the garage was blacktoped (yes half), they went over concrete, not sure what possessed them to ever do it.

I had that at my old garage, I had the race deck material over the blacktop and that worked pretty well, except all the crap that spilled through the race deck tiles made the blacktop underneath worse.

X…

I like the race deck tiles. Were they okay/strong enough to jack stuff up on with the blacktop underneath?

Sisters garage floor is all blacktop, not un heard of. I found this out the same way too.

I priced out concrete to redo my floor (18x18) and it was around $850 with mesh.

Thats just materials

yeah no problem. I’ve seen guys at the track use them on the grass (under the awnings of trailers and such)

X…

My 1940 house in buffalo was 1/2 wood, 1/2 asphalt in the garage… not unheard of at all.

Rip it out and pour a new floor…$3-4k. Then coat it with Epoxy. You’ll be much happier.

If in your situation I would go racedeck or similar… unlike concrete you can take it with you when you move.

Garage floor expoxy is only several millimeters thick. It won’t prevent the floor beneath it from sinking under load.
