Alright i need to get help now this isnt looking good. Im having a shifter tranny problem it seems no one can diagnose. compare it to someone putting glue in your shifter. it just doesnt want to move and its getting worse. it has no problem going into the gear itself but moving the shifter there is another story. could someone help me out!?
Done the tranny fluid lately? Is it an aftermarket or stock shifter piece?
i honestly dont know when the fluid was done last. i was told that it wouldnt cause that much problems though. is it possible? and the shifter is stock
take it out and take a look, change the fluid it takes 30min, i think you would also feel this if the wrong fluid is in or its over filled way too much.
Like Jesse said…
If it was me, i’d get the transmission fluid out, and inspect for anything fishy. Then replace with some Redline or Mobil 1 synthetic (might as well, right?).
If the fluid change does the trick, great. If it doesn’t but you see metal flakes, then you’re probably going to need to open the tranny. And it wouldn’t cost too much to find out. Chances are I would guess it would be one of those two…
Either way, good luck!
not to be an ass …
There’s no fluid in a manual transmission, just oil. Regular ass oil.
Change the OIL in your transmission.
While you’re in there, have a look at your drain plug. Is it all covered in a metal porcupine?
Your definition of “won’t move” … is it just stiffer, or physically very hard to move?
If the shifter feels like it’s jamming up against something, your clutch might be toast. There’s a small possibility something like a clip or a piece of an o-ring, small rodent … etc. is jamming it. But in all honesty (if it is more than just getting stiffer) it’s time for a rebuild.
What it sounds like to me is your shiift rods are falling out of alignment. Basically, there are rods that the shifter engages to select which gear you are trying to use. They use a small ballbearing and a spring as “stops”. The shift rod has a groove in it, and when the ballbearing seats in the groove, the shift rod stops moving. As trannies wear out, you get slop. Sometimes it’ll just make the shifter pop out of gear, and sometimes, it will keep it from going in. This is not something you’re going to want to attempt in your driveway. Hell, I messed up aligning the rods once (first time taking apart a manual, didn’t know what bolts did what  and it took us a few hours of messing with them just to get the tranny to work AT ALL.
no it is physically very hard to move. it does go into gear just fine though. the clutch was slipping a bit before i guess that may have become a problem… is there a way of checking without dropping the tranny, i dont think so but i thought id ask lol.
in regards to the oil… do i just replace it with 10w30??? i didnt know that.
i hope i dont need a rebuild, i dont even know if a shop can rebuild an SR tranny, id probably be better of getting a different one.?
If you’re clutch is slipping, AND the shifter is physically hard to move, AND you’re turbocharged, AND you don’t know the type of OIL (frickin’ MR200 lol ) to put in (should be 75W90 or similar - see FSM, no offense), then i’d advise having a tranny shop or trusted mechanic figure out what’s going on inside.
Good luck with it.
P.S. You might also want to find out why clutch is slipping - age or insufficient holding power?
yeah ill just change the oil in it and see if that helps, otherwise ill take it to my mechanic. oh and the clutch is slipping because it cant hold the power. ohwell time to get a new one.
uh… you’re gonna put motor oil in your tranny?.. I thought that’s what gear lube was for
80w-90 Quaker state synth is what I use, and it is rated API-GL5 just like your owners manual requests.
Smooth as butter.
check ur master and slave and clutch pedal adjustment
haha yeah i was drunk so.
i’m confused on this issue. my manual says to use gl-4, and not gl-5. gl-5 is what it recommends for the diff. when i googled this topic, i found out that gl-5 could seriously harm your transmission, something about too many extreme pressure additives in the gl-5 which will damage transmissions requiring gl-4. enlightenment on this topic please? thanks.
Heh … I don’t actually have a manual for S13 or 14.
I don’t know what I was thinking. That is what I have in my diff. I have Royal Purple in the tranny.
Just check your manual. If it says GL-4 use a GL-4. Quaker state also offers a GL-4 in 75W-90 and 80w-90.
But you’re right in a way. GL5 is only bad to use where it calls for GL4 because the two oils can contaminate each other.
hi. there is six bolts that hold the shifter in place . un do the bolts and the shifter and mounting plate wiil come out. that way you can tell if the plastic bushing in side is bad. i had a customer to his own swap and some how the plastic bushing in side shifter housing was melted. making the shifter realy hard to move.
ya thats personally what i think it is… i really need to do that
