We wired up all the cobalt digital gauges and the LC1 wideband stuff. Wired up the fule pump relay, new alt. and starter wires. added a new ground to the motor. Attached all the engine wires and clips, only found 2 that I dont know WTF they go to! lol. Ran the vac line to the distro block and sent everything where it needs to go and plugged the rest up. Decided against the catch can, and just tee’d them up and put a breather on the shit. Welded up a POS coolant car, it came out like balls and will be replaced over the winter… it works for now. Ran all the coolant lines, which was fun. I dont have heat, so i pinched the crack pipe closed and welded it up and capped the return line to the head, the rest was ran fine. There will be alot of wire clean up to to later but everything is where it needs to go to make it run. I turned the rotors and put new pads on so I have brakes again. Biggest bummer was someone (me) left the gasket off the t-stat, which we found out when I filled it with coolant! what a pain in the ass to get to with the front clip back in! fix that in about 30 minutes… FYI 1/4" ratchet, LONG extension, 10MM socket and a universal is NEEDED, 3/8"s is too big… once I figured out the right position it wasnt that bad.
Found a nice APC, lol, air filter that fit PERFECT on the turbo. 4 inch inlet and it was a short cone shape and was only 4" tall! I lucked out big time on that find.
Pulled the plugs and disconnected the oil feed to the turbo to prime the oil system. It took a while to get oil to come put… like a good 40 seconds of cranking… log enough to make me think I forgot to put the chain on the oil pump! lol. eventually it dumped oil so I connected it back up and was good to go.
Went to prime the fuel line, and found out that you only get one prime cycle from the in tank per key in the igntion. you have to take the key OUT of the ignition and put it back in and turn it to on to get it to prime again. not just on off, on off… so once I got the air out, I put the fuse in the walbro pump and I was good to go. But I also found out, well confirmed that the gas that was in the tank for the last year was nasty! even though I stabilzed it it was bad looking. But good enough to fire it.
One last check and we put the plugs in and reconnected the injectors. took 3 coughs and a little go pedal imput and it fired right up and idled decent. BIG relief! Had good oil pressure and no leaks anywhere! No exhaust on it yet, just a 3" DP, so it rattled the barn! The idle is a bit off, like it may be down a cyclinder. It sounds like I have a cam! I know it needs to adapt out and break in, plus I have the old plugs, who knows what coils I have on there I picked from 10 of them in my stash and it is shit gas so I am not too worried about it right now. It fired I am happy.
Tonight I am draining the tank and getting new gas, plugs and finishing up the new front rebar and hanging the heat exchanger and filling the WAIC. Adjusting the shift cables and putting the trans through some rotations. Need to bleed the slave cyclinder and the power steering system. throw a hanger on the DP and button it up a bit more to take it for a spin and put it on the VAG COM.
anyway… here it is…
