GM Passlock problem

I have a 99 Savana 1 ton and I think the issue is coming down to the GM security. I changed the fuel pump and filter, gas is getting to the engine. It starts for a couple seconds and dies. The fuel pump issue was prior to this, so I didn’t replace it for no reason.

The security light stays lit on the dash and I have tried to do the reset with the turn the key on leave it for ten minutes and repeat three times method. The Security light never goes off the dash, I guess it’s supposed to.

I was looking into the “solder a resister in the wiring and just bypass it” method as followed here: http://www.articlesbase.com/automotive-articles/how-to-permanently-disable-gm-passlock-system-958465.html. I get no reading at all on the wires. I checked the cylinder where the wires plug in and get nothing either. Now the key has always been kinda hard to turn in the Van, sometimes it takes some wiggling and turning the wheel and basically luck for it go engage but it always worked after a couple tries.

I have no idea how to go about this since I’m not getting a resistance like everyone is saying I should. Could I find out what it’s supposed to be from my VIN calling a dealer? (the one I called said my van didn’t have any type of security).

Thanks.

is there a remote start in the van??

i can take a looksy if you would like

No there isn’t. Just whatever GM put in at the factory. I moved down to Charlotte, but I do appreciate the offer.

to reset the passlock … turn the key to the on/run position … for 15 min … not 10 (light will go off) … then turn the key off… and right back on to attempt to start

if that fails … you need someone handy with a techII

No dice. I just left it on for probably a half hour and it stayed on.

Ugh sucks, I have a friend with a Grand Am with the same damn problem.

Here ya go: http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74971

I did it a few months ago for my grand am and have had no problems since. It was really pissing me off for the longest time trying to figure it out. Threw some resistors in and no problems since.

This is a super common problem… Gl

It turns out when you do the three key on key off cycles it does not reset the resistance in the bcm, it relearns it. I had a potentiometer I was using to test I all the oem values until something worked, but I just cycled it on one value (I tried 2.2k ohm because aparently a lot of people have luck with that) and it now starts and runs like a champ. So reading the resistance through the key only really matters if you don’t want to do the thirty minute key cycling apparently.

Just in case anyone runs into it later.
